Asserts that during the 19th-20th centuries, French antisemitism had a great influence in Spain, backed by the old Spanish medieval stereotypes about the Jews. The new French antisemitism described the Jew as a secret conspirator who wished to dominate the world and destroy European culture. In Spain, as in the rest of Europe, this image was used (mostly by militant Catholic circles) to rationalize the end of absolutism and the rise of liberalism. Later, the same stereotype was used to explain the Russian Revolution. After World War II, antisemitism in Spain declined, but in the 1990s the hostile image of the Jew was updated and used in order to explain the globalization process taking place in the world economy.

What development did anti-Semitism take in Spain when, after the Banishment Edict (1492), the country was no longer a locus of co-existence for different ethnic groups? This was the topic central to the colloquium in Konstanz (May 2000), the results of which are presented here. The colloquium united anthropologists, historians and literary scholars. This interdisciplinary approach focused on the factors, spaces, figures and voices involved in anti-Jewish (and hence anti-Semitic) discourse, both in their historical context and in their literary representation. On the latter issue, as much attention is given to the apologetic as to the critical aspect.

Surveys the Jewish and Converso experience in medieval and early modern Spain. Describes anti-Jewish actions before 1492, such as the forced conversions in 1391 and the creation of the new Inquisition in Seville in 1480. Analyzes the anti-Converso phenomenon from the 16th century on: under Carlos V suspicions against Judaizers increased, Conversos were accused of participation in the Comunero movement, and they were subject to "limpieza de sangre" statutes. Beginning in Felipe II's reign, religious discrimination and the pressure of the Inquisition decreased, but political-social differences were stressed by the Administration and the Cortes, reducing Conversos to second class citizens, barred from state offices, the clergy, and the army. States that Conversos were hated not by the elite, but by the popular classes. Waves of persecution of Portuguese Conversos in Spain occurred in the 16th-18th centuries. Refers, also, to Sephardic Jews and the Jewish contribution to the making of the capitalist system. Annexe 1 (p. 193-206) deals with the Chuetas of Mallorca.
