Robert Morris (Kansas City, 1931) es uno de los artistas clave para entender el desarrollo y la evolución del arte durante la segunda mitad del siglo XX. Su obra ha transitado prácticamente por la mayoría de los movimientos y tendencias del arte desde finales de los años cincuenta hasta la actualidad. Ha pintado a la manera expresionista, ha realizado obras neodadaístas y conceptuales, estructuras primarias y formas escultóricas minimalistas, trabajos de arte procesual, intervenciones en el arte de la tierra, acciones de reivindicación social, crítica institucional al museo y la galería, danza, performance, vídeo o dibujo. Aunque ha sido su vinculación con el minimal art y la escultura de los años sesenta la que le ha garantizado un lugar en el canon del arte contemporáneo, la riqueza de su producción artística abarca otro gran número de preocupaciones y temáticas entre las que se encuentran la experiencia del cuerpo, el movimiento, el proceso, el tiempo real, la reivindicación de la condición social del artista como trabajador, la relación entre visión y ceguera, entre texto e imagen, la memoria, la muerte, la catástrofe o la melancolía. Cuestiones en todos los casos atravesadas por una crítica audaz e inteligente tanto al modernismo y su concepción del arte como un aparte de la vida, como a la modernidad entera en tanto que sistema opresor, disciplinario y deshumanizador.

Visual Typologies from the Early Modern to the Contemporary investigates the pictorial representation of types from the sixteenth to the twenty- first century. Originating in longstanding visual traditions, including street crier prints and costume albums, these images share certain conventions as they seek to convey knowledge about different peoples. The genre of the type became widespread in the early modern period, developing into a global language of identity. The chapters explore diverse pictorial representations of types, customs, and dress in numerous media, including paintings, prints, postcards, photographs, and garments. Together, they reveal that the activation of typological strategies, including seriality, repetition, appropriation, and subversion has produced a universal and dynamic pictorial language. Typological images highlight the tensions between the local and the international, the specific and the communal, and similarity and difference inherent in the construction of identity. The first full- length study to treat these images as a broader genre, Visual Typologies gives voice to a marginalized form of representation. La autora analiza cuál es la percepción social del arte y del artista contemporáneo. El objetivo es determinar si ésta influye en el consumo de las producciones artísticas actuales bajo la sospecha de que existe actualmente un distanciamiento entre público y artistas. Para ello, adoptando una metodología cualitativa, se plantea un estudio de caso de carácter instrumental. Una vez analizados los datos publicados sobre el consumo cultural del Ministerio de Cultura, se pretende conocer, por una parte, la actitud de la sociedad actual frente al arte y al artista contemporáneo mediante la realización de encuestas; y por otra, la visión de los profesionales del sistema del arte acerca de la problemática del consumo de las actuales producciones artísticas, mediante la realización de entrevistas. El marco conceptual busca conocer el origen histórico de la actual relación entre arte, artistas y sociedad, con especial con especial atención al siglo XX, momento crítico de redefinición del arte y de ruptura dramática entre público y artistas, teorizado por autores como Ortega y Gasset, Danto, o Mayrata. También se exponen las principales aportaciones de Benjamin, Dorfles, García Canclini o Bourdieu, autor de importante referencia en este trabajo, en las que se exploran las nuevas relaciones de consumo cultural entre el público y las artes plásticas surgidas en el siglo XX. Finalmente se hace una breve evolución histórica del coleccionismo en nuestro país, presentando también la situación actual del mercado del arte en España. Aunque hay estudios sobre el consumo cultural de las artes plásticas, no existen trabajos que investiguen la problemática a partir de las opiniones de los principales implicados. Esta investigación pretende suplir el vacío existente exponiendo y confrontando la visión de las dos partes afectadas: la del público y la del propio sistema del arte, para diagnosticar así la naturaleza de las posibles barreras existentes, primer paso necesario para trabajar en la ampliación del público del arte contemporáneo.
