A la literatura taurina generalmente le ha faltado rigor. Las historias que se han escrito sobre la evolución del toreo en su mayoría han sido simplistas, maniqueas y, al final, falsas. Cuatro ideas, bastante pobres por cierto, que se le ocurrieron a alguien, las han repetido como cotorras casi todos los demás; así se ha llegado a una ignorancia generalizada sobre el toreo de los últimos cien años. Sorprende ver a muchos que se creen buenos aficionados y entendidos manejando tres tópicos de escaso fundamento, ignorando la realidad del toreo. Hay, pues, un enorme desconocimiento de la historia del último siglo de toros. Por ello se hace necesaria una revisión histórica, y eso es, precisamente, lo que REVISIÓN DEL TOREO. FUENTES, CAMINOS Y ESTILOS EN EL ARTE DE TOREAR pretende. . Y hay que empezar a decirlo. No hubo un mesías proféticamente iluminado que inventara él solo el toreo moderno. No. Más bien el toreo actual es una obra colectiva, donde la aportación de Belmonte es fundamental, sí, pero no lo son menos las de Joselito el Gallo, Chicuelo y Manolete. Belmonte fue el gran esteta, pero esa estética no se hubiera consolidado sin las innovaciones técnicas de los otros. Además, las pretensiones de quietud de Belmonte quien de verdad las acabó consiguiendo fue Manolete veinte años después. Por ello, es conveniente revisar la historia oficial que presenta al de Triana como único inventor del toreo actual, momifica a Joselito, ignora a Chicuelo y denigra a Manolete. También se va haciendo necesario poner en entredicho esas teorías degeneracionistas que vienen a concluir que el toreo de los últimos tiempos no ha sido más que manierismo y mixtificación. Nada más incierto, pues precisamente en estos últimos cuarenta años quizás haya sido cuando mejor se ha visto torear. Este libro pretende clarificar estos extremos, porque se hace necesaria una REVISIÓN DEL TOREO.
