Para el estudio sistemático del bandolerismo en relación con la Violencia, puede dividirse esta última en tres fases de acuerdo con su desarrollo en el espacio–tiempo: Primera Fase: 1946-1953. Abarca el ascenso de Mariano Ospina Pérez a la presidencia en 1946, el asesinato de Gaitán en 1948, la persecución al liberalismo con fines electorales en 1949 y la conformación de la resistencia armada liberal y la caída de Laureano Gómez en 1953. Segunda Fase: 1955-1957. Comprende hechos como los ataques militares adelantados por la dictadura de Rojas Pinilla a los bastiones de guerrilla comunista y liberal del sur y oriente del Tolima, el asesinato por fuerzas del Estado de algunos ex guerrilleros liberales del Tolima que se habían acogido a la Amnistía de Rojas en 1953, como David Cantillo y Leónidas Borja, la eliminación sistemática de liberales por pájaros y bandas conservadoras en varias regiones del país, entre 1955 al 10 de mayo de 1957, hasta la caída de la dictadura de Rojas Pinilla. Tercera Fase: 1957-1966. Fase conocida como la del bandolerismo tardío. Incluye básicamente la venganza interpartidista del bandolerismo social y político liberal y conservador y la guerra del Frente Nacional contra la guerrilla comunista de orientación revolucionaria. Esta Tercera Fase finaliza con la aniquilación del bandolerismo liberal y conservador social y político, y se traslapa con el nacimiento del bandolerismo revolucionario en 1964 y la conformación de grupos guerrilleros que buscaban un cambio a las estructuras políticas y sociales mediante la vía armada.

Cauca's Indigenous Movement in Southwestern Colombia: Land, Violence, and Ethnic Identity provides a vivid account of how the indigenous communities of Cauca in southwestern Colombia engaged with the Colombian central state. Troyan begins with the question of how 3.4 percent of the Colombian population obtained legal rights to close to a quarter of the national territory. Her in-depth study of the correspondence between the central state and indigenous communities of Cauca reveals that the nation state played a key role in the legitimization of land claims based on ethnic identity. Starting with the indigenous movement led by Manuel Quintín Lame in 1914, this book shows how, in contrast to the local authorities of Cauca, the central state adopted a more sympathetic albeit contradictory approach to indigenous communities’ grievances throughout the twentieth century. Land, Violence, and Cauca's Indigenous Movement in Southwestern Colombia presents an examination of state initiatives in the 1930s, 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s toward indigenous communities in Cauca, whichsheds light on the political and social construction of Colombian indigenous identity. Troyan also reveals how violence and the representation of violence shaped the conversations between the central state and indigenous communities of Cauca; the central state’s inability to exert a monopoly on violence, Troyan argues, places indigenous communities and their leaders in jeopardy despite the discursive legitimization of land claims based on ethnic identity.

El gran historiador inglés, Eric Hobsbawm, en su texto Rebeldes primitivos (1983, p. 264), califica la Violencia en Colombia como "la mayor movilización armada de campesinos (ya sea como guerrilleros, bandoleros o grupos de autodefensa) en la historia reciente del hemisferio occidental, con la posible excepción de determinados períodos de la Revolución mexicana". A partir de esta consideración, usando la categoría de bandolero social y explotando cientos de documentos del Archivo Germán Guzmán, el libro analiza el bandolerismo en Colombia durante la llamada Violencia tardía, aquel triste periodo de la historia nacional comprendido entre los años 1958 (inicio del Frente Nacional) y 1965 (muerte del Siete Colores). Se analizan las características sociológicas más sobresalientes de este fenómeno, su ubicación y concentración en la geografía nacional, el carácter de las cuadrillas, la participación en ellas de la mujer bandolera, la vida cotidiana en estas estructuras armadas de hombres rudos, el desafío que significaron para el Estado colombiano y cómo cientos de bandoleros, que integraban más de 120 bandas, murieron en los enfrentamientos con el Ejército y la Policía y la tristeza de muchos campesinos por esas muertes. Lo anterior se ejemplifica con la reconstrucción de las trayectorias vitales de los tres principales bandidos liberales: Sangre Negra, Desquite y Chispas. El libro se pregunta por las causas sociales y las subjetividades que explicarían el proceso mediante el cual un número muy grande de campesinos fueron arrastrados, por la fuerza de las circunstancias, a empuñar las armas para defender sus vidas y cómo se convirtieron en asesinos desalmados y las continuidades y discontinuidades con el conflicto actual que padece Colombia.

La visión estratégica del general Alberto Ruiz Novoa propendía por la pacificación del país por medio del Plan Lazo, refrendado con la baja en combate de legendarios bandoleros, que, financiados e instigados por los dirigentes nacionales y locales de los partidos Liberal, Conservador y Comunista, asolaban a Colombia, escudados en la clandestinidad y pintorescos remoquetes, tales como Chispas, Desquite, Sangrenegra, Tarzán, Veneno, Resplandor, Alma negra, Mariachi, Tirofijo, Puente Roto, Zarpazo, el Zarco, etc. Lo atrayente para todos los sectores generadores de opinión en el país acerca del Plan Lazo, fue la combinación de acciones de inteligencia militar de combate con operaciones de comandos especializados por medio de grupos de localización de bandoleros, simultáneas con ingentes dosis de acción cívico-militar y operaciones sicológicas, para consolidar las áreas afectadas por la “segunda violencia” (1958-1964). Al mismo tiempo, que se invitaba a los campesinos a no apoyar a los delincuentes, y se conminaba a los bandoleros a desmovilizarse. En una serie de convincentes presentaciones ante el Congreso de la República, el general Alberto Ruiz Novoa, defendió el Plan ''Lazo'', como un amplio esquema cívico-militar, diseñado para involucrar a cada una de las Fuerzas Armadas en proyectos específicos, bajo el auspicio económico del Plan de Asistencia Militar, con apoyo de los créditos provenientes de asistencia para el desarrollo de los Estado Unidos. Esta fue una coyuntura crítica, mal conducida por el poder civil, en la que se echó la suerte y se perdió la oportunidad para combinar las nuevas medidas progresistas de las Fuerzas Militares y de Policía, las cuales incluían asistencia socioeconómica, con intensos programas puramente civiles, que hubiesen traído como resultado, no tan sólo la reducción de la delincuencia, sino soluciones felices de largo alcance, tanto para el soldado como para el campesino. El Plan Lazo era complejo, pero abarcaba tres líneas principales de acometida. Una operación especial de antiviolencia tendría lugar en la zona limítrofe de los departamentos del Valle y Caldas. Cada una de las fuerzas participantes en ambos departamentos, cumpliría un plan de acción cívica para suministrar servicios sociales permanentes o semipermanentes y se realizarían esfuerzos para coordinar el plan con el Consejo de Acción Cívica, cuando las circunstancias lo requirieran, con el fin de determinar los proyectos, que las agencias civiles del Estado o la empresa privada no pudieran o quisieran acometer. En tales casos, los proyectos se asignarían a las Fuerzas Armadas, las cuales desempeñarían su ejecución y administración como cualquier contratista del gobierno.
