Este trabajo de investigación parte de la inquietud por estudiar un tema novedoso en el ámbito urbano como es el branding de ciudad. Sus antecedentes se remontan a las exposiciones internacionales como el escenario en el que se dan cita por primera vez el turismo, las grandes transformaciones urbanas, la arquitectura emblemática y la marca como un concepto que pretende identificar el objeto industrializado. Analiza en qué contexto se desarrolla el branding y las dinámicas que supone la competencia interurbana, donde el mito de la identidad cultural cobra protagonismo para el desarrollo de ideologías en torno a la democracia y el espacio público. A su vez, se estudian los diversos elementos contextuales que formulan y legitiman la ciudad como marca, para lo cual el paradigma iconográfico será el “I ♥ NY”, mientras que el modelo urbano de promoción interna de ciudad y proyección de una marca destino será el caso de Barcelona.
