En la història de la protecció de la natura a Catalunya, el Montseny sempre hi ha estat present, com també ho ha estat l’urbanisme, l’eina fonamental per a la consecució dels objectius de conservació dels espais naturals del país. Aquest volum divulga alguns aspectes de l’evolució de la protecció del massís del Montseny al llarg del temps, en paral·lel a l’establiment de les estructures urbanístiques que han regulat l’ordenació del territori, les quals, des de la primera Llei del sòl del 1956, han previst i regulat la conservació del medi natural. Això ja es fa palès en el Pla Comarcal del 1953 i es detalla més en el Pla Provincial del 1963, amb un primer catàleg dels parcs naturals de la província de Barcelona. Els primers capítols tracten temes bàsics per al coneixement, la valoració i l’estima de la muntanya del Montseny. Un d’aquests temes és l’excursionisme, que de fer «muntanya» va passar a estudiar els sistemes naturals. Un altre, fonamental per a la valoració i l’estima del massís del Montseny, és el fet que el Montseny ha estat una font d’inspiració literària per a molts autors, entre ells Jacint Verdaguer i Jaume Bofill i Mates (Guerau de Liost). A la primera meitat del segle xx, la flora i fauna del Montseny foren objecte de molts estudis científics, que propiciaren propostes serioses de protecció del massís i que culminaren en el Reial decret llei del 1928, dictat a Estocolm pel rei Alfons XIII. En altres capítols del llibre s’explica la influència del Regional Planning en la conservació del medi natural, reflectida en els plans comarcals i provincials de la dècada dels anys vint. Es remarca la funció pionera de la Diputació de Barcelona en les polítiques de protecció de la natura, que finalment va confluir en la creació d’un servei específic per a la gestió i l’ordenació dels parcs naturals. El Servei de Parcs Naturals i Medi Ambient fou el primer i l’únic existent en la dècada dels anys setanta en les administracions locals i provincials de l’Estat. En el llibre també es tracten altres qüestions que han incidit en la protecció dels espais naturals, com les «urbanitzacions» de segones residències de les dècades dels anys cinquanta i seixanta, així com la jurisprudència sobre les declaracions de parcs naturals i l’aprovació dels seus plans especials de protecció. La Constitució espanyola i l’Estatut d’autonomia de Catalunya van atorgar la competència sobre aquestes matèries a la Generalitat de Catalunya, cosa que va permetre que, des d’aquell moment, no calgués emprar la legislació estatal i urbanística per a la protecció dels espais naturals, atès que la Generalitat ja es podia dotar d’instruments legals propis, tal com va fer amb la Llei d’espais naturals de Catalunya del 1985. Finalment, també s’hi tracta la revisió del Pla Especial de Protecció del Montseny de 1977-1978, a conseqüència de la campanya «El Montseny i el futur». També hi són estudiats el nou Pla Especial, la seva anul·lació i la nova jurisprudència sobre el Montseny, fet que malauradament ens ha retornat al principi. En un dels annexos s’inclou el recentíssim Decret 127/2021, de l’1 de juny, sobre el Parc Natural del Montseny i sobre els espais del PEIN el Montseny i Cingles de Bertí.
