El castillo de Eppstein es la primera incursión de Alejandro Dumas en la novela gótica, y posee todos los ingredientes y convenciones del género. Causó furor en el siglo XIX con su imprescindible dosis de secretos familiares, malvados villanos, doncellas en peligro, amores y desamores apasionados, y fantasmas vengadores. Alejandro Dumas (1802 – 1870) fue un prolífico novelista y dramaturgo francés. Reconocido y aclamado por sus obras notables tales como El Conde de Montecristo y Los Tres Mosqueteros. Su padre, el general Thomas-Alexandre Dumas, conocido como ‘el conde negro’, habría sido la fuente de inspiración para muchas de sus novelas. Dumas es considerado uno de los autores mas destacados y difundidos de la literatura francesa, y el introductor del Romanticismo en el teatro francés.
