El método descriptivo utiliza los contornos de las tradiciones islámicas, mientras se ajusta a las historias de milagros y reclamos centrados en la fe dentro de esas fuentes. Edward Gibbon y Gustav Weil representan a algunos de los primeros historiadores que siguen el método descriptivo. En el método crítico de la fuente, se busca una comparación de todas las fuentes para identificar qué informantes de las fuentes son débiles yasí distinguir el material espurio. El trabajo de William Montgomery Watt y el de Wilferd Madelung son dos ejemplos críticos de origen. En el método crítico tradicional, se cree que las fuentes se basan en tradiciones orales con orígenes e historial de transmisión poco claros, por lo que se tratan con mucha cautela. Ignaz Goldziher fue el pionero del método crítico tradicional, y Uri Rubin da un ejemplo contemporáneo. El método escéptico duda de casi todo el material en las fuentes tradicionales, considerando que cualquier núcleo histórico posible es demasiado difícil de descifrar a partir de material distorsionado y fabricado. Un primer ejemplo del método escéptico fue el trabajo de John Wansbrough.
