Pablo Neruda siempre estuvo escribiendo sus memorias. Confieso que he vivido, su proyecto autobiográfico más ambicioso, recoge su rica experiencia vital. Neruda fue un testigo privilegiado de la historia del siglo xx y un poeta de muchas vidas, que se pasea por la amplitud del mundo, que transita entre la muchedumbre y la intimidad, y que explora la naturaleza y el amor. El poeta quería publicar este libro en 1974 para celebrar sus setenta años, pero el golpe militar de septiembre de 1973 precipitó su muerte. Su viuda, Matilde Urrutia, junto al escritor venezolano Miguel Otero Silva, concluyeron su edición en Caracas. Finalmente, Confieso que he vivido apareció en 1974 y circuló en Chile tan clandestinamente como había vivido su autor cuando fue perseguido político en 1948. A esta nueva edición se incorporaron materiales inéditos encontrados en los archivos de la Fundación Pablo Neruda. Entre ellos, un cuaderno fechado en junio de 1973 con anotaciones manuscritas sobre los temas que debía incluir en sus memorias. También, el relato del regreso del poeta a la ciudad de su infancia, donde el único vestigio que encuentra es un viejo caballo de madera. En otros de estos escritos, Neruda se refiere a la vida íntima de uno de sus grandes amigos, el autor granadino Federico García Lorca, y se encuentran reflexiones acerca de la religión y la poesía, y sobre la dimensión histórica y política de la tierra austral, donde nace su poesía. Hay, además, textos sobre dos de sus principales adversarios políticos y literarios, permitiéndonos esta suma de hallazgos proponer nuevas lecturas de las vidas del poeta. Pablo Neruda, Premio Nobel de Literatura de 1971, narra en estas memorias, con la potencia verbal que caracteriza sus mejores escritos, los principales episodios de su vida y las circunstancias que rodearon la creación de sus poemas y libros más famosos. De forma no menos brillante, rememora las figuras de algunos amigos: Alberti, Miguel Hernández, Éluard, Aragon y su relación con personajes destacados de la política contemporánea. A este respecto, resulta particularmente emotiva la evocación -que cierra este libro- de su amigo el presidente Salvador Allende, escrita a tres días de su trágica muerte.

From notions of art for art’s sake to committed poetry, it may seem that poets cannot achieve reconciliation between the politics and poetry. However, among committed Communist poets of the 20th century of the Spanish-speaking world, three poets stand out as examples of a search to bring together their political and their poetic commitments: Rafael Alberti, Nicolás Guillén, and Pablo Neruda. Political Poetry in the Wake of the Second Spanish Republic analyzes the simultaneous development of politics and poetics in these three Spanish-language poets as it was nurtured by the Second Spanish Republic (1931-1939). Beginning in these years, Alberti, Guillén, and Neruda strove to tackle the challenge of committing to their own independent poetic projects and to their politics at the same time. Later, these three poets maintained their Communist Party affiliation until their deaths and produced collection after collection of quality poetry. Despite the differences in their overall poetic trajectories and projects, the ability to maneuver between politics and poetry without sacrificing either one is common among them. Because of their unique experiences during the time of the Second Spanish Republic in Spain, each author explicitly denounced the injustices that the opposing Franquist forces had committed against the Republic. After the fall of the Republic in 1939, Alberti, Guillén, and Neruda continued to intertwine their politics with their poems only in a less obvious manner. Therefore, each could solidify his position within the poetic canon while at the same time each could maintain his position as a committed (or at least card-carrying) Communist.

On October 1, 1920, the city of Santiago, Chile, came to a halt as tens of thousands stopped work and their daily activities to join the funeral procession of José Domingo Gómez Rojas, a 24 year old university student and acclaimed poet. Nicknamed "the firecracker poet" for his incendiary poems, such as "The Cry of the Renegade" Gómez Rojas was a member of the University of Chile's student federation (the FECh) which had come under repeated attack for its critiques of Chile's political system and ruling parties. Government officials accused the FECh's leaders of being advocates for the destruction of the social order, subversives who had the temerity to question national policy making, and insolent youths who did not know their place. Arrested for alleged sedition as part of a five-month-long "prosecution of subversives," Gómez Rojas joined other students and workers in Santiago's prison system. He never left. After two months in police custody, he died in Santiago's asylum, quickly to be reborn as a political martyr for students and workers alike. This microhistory recovers the context within which Gómez Rojas's arrest, imprisonment, and death unfolded and the experiences of men he counted as friends, comrades, colleagues, mentors, and pupils. Fifty years before the much-heralded student movements of 1968, Raymond Craib shows, university students and workers were active political collaborators and radicalized political subjects. In interwar Chile, members of Chile's sizeable working class marched side-by-side with students from the FECh. At the same time, increasingly radicalized university students, as well as former students, workers, and worker-intellectuals, gathered together to talk, read, and find common cause. Members of what Craib calls a "capacious Left" they shared a wide-ranging interest in works of sociology and political theory, a penchant for poetry, and an eclectic embrace of anarchist, socialist, and communist principles and practices. They also shared the experience of repression, an experience that ultimately cost Gómez Rojas his life and marked an entire generation of political organizers and agitators, including future president Salvador Allende and poet Pablo Neruda.

Los procesos migratorios son, sin duda, elementos identitarios de nuestra actual sociedad del siglo XXI. Forman parte de la actividad cotidiana la amplia relación de noticias que, a este respecto, se introducen en nuestras vidas en cada momento. Los seres humanos cambian de hábitat con una frecuencia mucho más elevada de lo que creemos. Es un fenómeno que arranca desde la Edad Antigua y que, sin solución de continuidad, ha permeado todos los procesos históricos de la Humanidad en su conjunto. Así, la diáspora libre ocupa un papel menos primacial que la obligatoria del exilio o la protagonizada por la violencia política, desafortunadamente. En este trabajo, se analiza una parte de esa salida voluntaria de españoles hacia Chile entre 1810 y 2015, si bien es cierto que también hay espacio para el exilio traumático proveniente de la Guerra Civil Española de 1936 a 1939. Los mejores especialistas en Historia de las Relaciones Internacionales y de las Migraciones Transoceánicas de las universidades de Chile, de Los Andes, de La Frontera (Temuco) y de Santiago de Chile, en este país, y CIESE/Comillas, Universidad Rey Juan Carlos, Autónoma de Madrid y de Oviedo, en España, se aúnan en este libro que busca profundizar en una diáspora transatlántica con destino al país austral que, sin ser excesivamente voluminosa, ha tenido, no obstante, una incidencia cualitativa de altura. Muchas cosas quedan nítidas en este trabajo académico pero destacaremos tres. La primera, que los procesos migratorios son eternos, permanentes, cíclicos, locales pero de larga duración en alto grado. La segunda, que las relaciones internacionales no se explican, al menos en un importante factor sectorial, sin tener en cuenta las diásporas humanas. La tercera, que los emigrantes siempre contribuyen al desarrollo socioeconómico de las sociedades de destino.
