Although Latin America weathered the Great Depression better than the United States and Europe, the global economic collapse of the 1930s had a deep and lasting impact on the region. The contributors to this book examine the consequences of the Depression in terms of the role of the state, party-political competition, and the formation of working-class and other social and political movements. Los colombianos no podemos olvidar que el café ha sido uno de nuestros productos de exportación más importantes. Su nivel de producción es tan alto que compromete a 590 municipios y los departamentos andinos del país. El área disponible para el cultivo del café es de cerca de 3,6 millones de hectáreas y se cultiva en 970 mil hectáreas, empleando a las familias propietarias de los predios cafeteros, y a miles de recolectores de café, que conforman el grueso de los trabajadores indirectos e indirectos, situación que determina que ésta sea nuestra industria emblemática.1 El café es el segundo producto básico más valioso del mundo, siendo el petróleo el primero. Existen en el mundo más de 20 millones de productores ubicados en 50 países. El área cultivada se estima en 11 millones de hectáreas dedicadas al cultivo del grano. El país productor más grande es Brasil, con 45,9 millones de sacos producidos en el año 2008 de acuerdo con las estadísticas de la OIC, seguido por Vietnam con 18,5 millones de sacos, Indonesia con 9,35 millones de sacos y Colombia con 8,65 millones. La producción mundial para el año cafetero octubre-septiembre de 2007-08 fue de 128,5 millones de sacos. Estados Unidos efectúa el 26% de las compras mundiales, representando más de 130 millones de consumidores habituales. El 30% de las ventas al detal se efect.an a través de una gran cadena de distribución, y existen más de 10 mil tiendas de café institucionalizadas como empresas que difunden el producto a través de cientos de franquicias en dicho país.
