Although sociological research has examined the reproduction of Chile’s elites, there is little empirical evidence as to how different forms of capital operate within them. Based on a survey of the country’s elites, this study examines the effect of different forms of capital (cultural, social and political) on access to strategic positions in the legislative and executive branches of government. It focuses on the political elite between 1990, when military dictator Augusto Pinochet handed over the presidency to Patricio Aylwin, his democratically elected successor, and 2010, the end of President Michelle Bachelet’s first government. At least three points are germane to this analysis: (1) understanding the nature of the party elites during the political transition; (2) describing and explaining the main aspects of the party elites’ background and social resources, including their family networks (independent variables); and (3) exploring the effect of those variables on individuals’ chances of achieving strategic positions in the political field, comparing the legislative and executive branches as represented by deputies and ministers (dependent variable).

Empowering Labor uses a comparative study of Chile, Portugal, and Uruguay to analyze the underlying political dynamics that shape the use of wage policy as a pre-distributive instrument of leftist parties in power in unequal democracies. The book theorizes that the unity of the Left and labor's political legitimacy are two main drivers for relating on wage policy as a pre-distributive instrument for promoting inclusion. These factors are shaped by elite long-term strategies towards labor. Such strategies, when dominant for long-enough periods, create path dependency, shaping differential opportunities for further options down the road. The book integrates large-scale historical processes with frequently analyzed short-term and agency-based factors to elucidate variation in the crafting of wage policies and reshapes the debate on the politics of pre-distribution in unequal democracies by situating the cases in a longer historical arc.

Este libro surgió con la intención de discutir una idea profundamente arraigada en el imaginario. Aquélla que supone que los males de la educación devienen del supuesto retiro del Estado y la privatización del sistema educativo. Ese proceso suele ser relacionado con una política particular: la descentralización del sistema educativo. También con una orientación política específica: las corrientes neoliberales que actuaron tanto bajo regímenes dictatoriales como democráticos. Este libro aporta a desmontar esa mitología analizando el fenómeno de la descentralización y la privatización entre 1955 y 2001, y llama la atención sobre el verdadero proceso que afecta al sistema educativo: su degradación. Entra la primera y la segunda edición de este libro el debate ha sido candente. Según los defensores de la tesis privativista, la década kirchnerista. (2003-2015) representaría uno de los momentos mas álgidos en el proceso de privatización y se sumaría un fenómeno ̈nuevo ̈: la migración de alumnos del sector público al empresarial.
