La novela de detectives en Hispanoamérica cuenta en la actualidad con dos autores referentes: Paco Ignacio Taibo II, en México, y Leonardo Padura Fuentes, en Cuba. La ciudad es el escenario central de la trama de sus obras y establece una estrecha relación con personajes cuyas tensiones existenciales van más allá de las abordadas tradicionalmente en el género. El detective y la ciudad. El espacio urbano en las novelas de detectives de Paco Ignacio Taibo II y Leonardo Padura Fuentes se ocupa de las expresiones concretas de la ciudad en la narrativa de estos dos escritores. Para ello, se ilustra cómo la poética de los autores desborda los marcos tradicionales del género de la novela de detectives, no solo con la introducción de nuevas estrategias narrativas para la relación entre el crimen y los métodos racionales para su dilucidación, sino también con el desarrollo de la dimensión humana de los personajes, inmersos en ambientes urbanos, y con el desencanto creado por la frustración de sus respectivos proyectos sociales.

Esteban Herrera Iranzo (Barranquilla, Colombia; 1950- ) Procedente de una familia de periodistas y abogados, "El Narrador de La Arenosa", como es conocido en el medio literario, sintió desde muy joven una gran afición por el estudio de la comprensión, interpretación y representación del humano en su reacción sentimental al mundo que lo rodea. Estudió Ciencias Jurídicas, y Dibujo y Pintura, en su país natal; lo cual le valió para desempeñarse en algunos cargos, como el de Director del Instituto Municipal de Cultura de Soledad, Departamento del Atlántico, y Profesor Catedrático de Diplomado en Derecho Notarial de la Universidad Simón Bolívar, en Barranquilla. Para ese tiempo escribió para el periódico "La Libertad", artículos relacionados con los cambios que la modernidad imprimía a la familia, y sobre diferentes aspectos de la vida social en la historia colombiana. Mas, fueron sus obras literarias "Olgo" y "San Juan y la Burra. El apóstol que llegó tarde", las que le situaron en el plano de los grandes escritores del país, por su extraordinaria narrativa y gran aporte al patrimonio cultural. Su ensayo "Neoliberalismo, Familia y Ruptura de la Pareja", ha servido por años como texto de consulta para profesionales que se especializan en Derecho de Familia colombiano. A comienzos del 2003, llegó a Miami con su esposa y un hijo menor. Allí realizó estudios de Arte Dramático, en "Prometeo", Miami Dade Community College. Algún tiempo después se estableció en Reading, Pensilvania, ciudad donde inicialmente escribió para el Periódico "La Voz", y la revista empresarial "Viwinco" y en la que ha escrito dos libros, "La Franciscana" (inédita) y "La Primate", obra ésta que hoy lanza al mundo.

This bilingual work identifies and explains the subversive rewriting of ancient, medieval and modern myths in contemporary novels. The book opens with two theoretical essays on the subject of subversive tendencies and myth reinvention in the contemporary novel. From there, it moves on to the analysis of essential texts. Firstly, classical myths in works by authors such as André Gide, Thomas Pynchon, Julio Cortázar, Italo Calvino or Christa Wolf (for instance, Theseus, Oedipus or Medea) are discussed. Then, myths of biblical origin – such as the Flood or the Golem – are revisited in the work of Giorgio Bassani, Julian Barnes and Cynthia Ozick. A further section is concerned with the place of modern myths (Faust, the ghost, Ophelia…) in the fiction of Günter Grass, Paul Auster, or Clara Janés. The contributors have also delved into the relationship between myth and art – especially in the discourse of contemporary advertising, painting and cinema – and myth’s intercultural dimensions: hybridity in the Latin American novels of Augusto Roa Bastos and Carlos Fuentes, and in the Hindu-themed novels of Bharati Mukherjee. This volume emerges from the careful selection of 37 essays out of over 200 which were put forward by outstanding scholars from 25 different countries for the Madrid International Conference on Myth and Subversion (March 2011). Este volumen bilingüe identifica y explica la práctica subversiva aplicada a los mitos antiguos, medievales y modernos en la novela contemporánea. Abren el libro dos estudios teóricos sobre la tendencia subversiva y la reinvención de mitos en la actualidad. Prosigue el análisis de diversos textos de primera importancia. En primer lugar se revisan los mitos clásicos en autores como André Gide, Thomas Pynchon, Julio Cortázar, Italo Calvino o Christa Wolf (p. ej., Teseo, Edipo, Medea). En segundo lugar, la reescritura de los mitos bíblicos según Giorgio Bassani, Julian Barnes o Cynthia Ozick (p. ej., el diluvio o el Golem). En tercer lugar, mitos modernos en la ficción de Günter Grass, Paul Auster o Clara Janés (p. ej., Fausto, el fantasma, Ofelia). Ella murió en el hospital de complicaciones de su anterior embarazo. Entonces, el niño, al nacer vino siendo la tercera generación. La directora de esa institución odiaba tanto a Martha como a su hijo. Pero la directora, cuando Martha murió, el diagnostico que le dieron de su muerte no le agradó. La directora puso al abogado de la institución para que se encargara del caso. Y el abogado rápido actuó, encontrando la verdadera razón y demandando al hospital por una fuerte suma de dinero. Luego la directora, quien era egoísta y ambiciosa, creía que iba a disfrutar de ese dinero. Pero el señor juez puso el dinero en una cuenta del banco para cuando el niño sea mayor de edad. El niño se escapó de la institución a la edad de doce años. Y si ustedes quieren saber todas las demás escenas existentes que ocurrieron en el transcurso del libro tendrán que leer el libro.
