Widely regarded as the second most-important book to come out of National Socialist Germany (after Mein Kampf), Alfred Rosenberg's The Myth of the 20th Century stands as a monumental work of social and political philosophy. Originally published in 1930 and then revised in 1937, this book lays out a comprehensive vision of the emerging racially-oriented German state. The "myth" is the Myth of the Blood: the idea that race or genetics is the proper founding principle of the modern state, and that the purpose of the state is to serve and protect its majority race. This was actually a very ancient concept, one that was lost in the late modern era but rediscovered by Hitler, Rosenberg, and other leading National Socialists. Rosenberg's penetrating analysis covers a vast range of scholarly topics: Greek, Nordic, and German mythology; ancient literature; Western and Eastern theology; the unique qualities of Judaism; philosophy of science; metaphysics; art and aesthetics; feminism; capitalism; Marxism-and much more. More than any other single work, Myth of the 20th Century presents the ideological foundations of the new Germany, and offers a comprehensive worldview to serve as a guiding image. As with Mein Kampf and other important works of that era, this book has never received proper treatment in an English translation, until now. The new Dalton edition presents a modernized and reworked translation that reads beautifully in contemporary English. The long text has been broken up by section headings drawn from the German original. Helpful footnotes and in-text citations add much to the clarity of the work. Finally, this edition includes a useful bibliography and detailed index. The Dalton edition will become the standard English version for years to come. Rosenberg's intellectual vigor, immense learning, and strength of vision are striking-even today, nearly a century later. This book is essential to any proper understanding of the National Socialist era.

"A ready reference aid and an inspiration to designers . All in all the best book now available on symbols." --Library Journal This unparalleled reference represents a major achievement in the field of graphic design. Famed industrial designer Henry Dreyfuss recognized the importance of symbols in communicating more quickly and effectively; for many years he and his staff collected and codified graphic symbols as they are used in all walks of life throughout the world. The result is this "dictionary" of universally used graphic symbols. Henry Dreyfuss designed this sourcebook to be as practical and easy to use as possible by arranging the symbol information within ingeniously devised sections: Basic Symbols represents a concise and highly selective grouping of symbols common to all disciplines (on-off, up-down, etc.). Disciplines provides symbols used in accommodations and travel, agriculture, architecture, business, communications, engineering, photography, sports, safety, traffic controls, and many other areas. Color lists the meanings of each of the colors in various worldwide applications and cultures. Graphic Form displays symbols from all disciplines grouped according to form (squares, circles, arrows, human figures, etc.) creating a unique way to identify a symbol out of context, as well as giving designers a frame of reference for developing new symbols. To make the sourcebook truly universal, the Table of Contents contains translations of each of the section titles and discipline areas into 17 languages in addition to English.

George Bernard Shaw demanded truth and despised convention. He punctured hollow pretensions and smug prudishness—coating his criticism with ingenious and irreverent wit. In Mrs. Warren’s Profession, Arms and the Man, Candida, and Man and Superman, the great playwright satirizes society, military heroism, marriage, and the pursuit of man by woman. From a social, literary, and theatrical standpoint, these four plays are among the foremost dramas of the age—as intellectually stimulating as they are thoroughly enjoyable. “My way of joking is to tell the truth: It is the funniest joke in the world.”—G. B. Shaw With an Introduction by Eric Bentley and an Afterword by Norman Lloyd

A caleidoscope of mental snapshots, 20 in 21 explores the fragmented experience of an unprecedented time. Through the lense of a woman, subjects like white priviledge, the struggle for self-acceptance as well as poetics move into and out of focus in quick progression. Formally the poems swing back and forth between free form and more traditional approaches to rythm and rhyme, but always keep their spoken word character. These poems are meant to be read out loud, discussed, dismissed, or identified with.

Common written by Pierre Dardot and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-01-24 with Philosophy categories.

Around the globe, contemporary protest movements are contesting the oligarchic appropriation of natural resources, public services, and shared networks of knowledge and communication. These struggles raise the same fundamental demand and rest on the same irreducible principle: the common. In this exhaustive account, Pierre Dardot and Christian Laval show how the common has become the defining principle of alternative political movements in the 21st century. In societies deeply shaped by neoliberal rationality, the common is increasingly invoked as the operative concept of practical struggles creating new forms of democratic governance. In a feat of analytic clarity, Dardot and Laval dissect and synthesize a vast repository on the concept of the commons, from the fields of philosophy, political theory, economics, legal theory, history, theology, and sociology. Instead of conceptualizing the common as an essence of man or as inherent in nature, the thread developed by Dardot and Laval traces the active lives of human beings: only a practical activity of commoning can decide what will be shared in common and what rules will govern the common's citizen-subjects. This re-articulation of the common calls for nothing less than the institutional transformation of society by society: it calls for a revolution.

The Dominican Racial Imaginary written by Milagros Ricourt and has been published by Rutgers University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-11-18 with History categories.

This book begins with a simple question: why do so many Dominicans deny the African components of their DNA, culture, and history? Seeking answers, Milagros Ricourt uncovers a complex and often contradictory Dominican racial imaginary. Observing how Dominicans have traditionally identified in opposition to their neighbors on the island of Hispaniola—Haitians of African descent—she finds that the Dominican Republic’s social elite has long propagated a national creation myth that conceives of the Dominican as a perfect hybrid of native islanders and Spanish settlers. Yet as she pores through rare historical documents, interviews contemporary Dominicans, and recalls her own childhood memories of life on the island, Ricourt encounters persistent challenges to this myth. Through fieldwork at the Dominican-Haitian border, she gives a firsthand look at how Dominicans are resisting the official account of their national identity and instead embracing the African influence that has always been part of their cultural heritage. Building on the work of theorists ranging from Edward Said to Édouard Glissant, this book expands our understanding of how national and racial imaginaries develop, why they persist, and how they might be subverted. As it confronts Hispaniola’s dark legacies of slavery and colonial oppression, The Dominican Racial Imaginary also delivers an inspiring message on how multicultural communities might cooperate to disrupt the enduring power of white supremacy.
