Solo entonces la literatura y el arte ocuparían un lugar en la sociedad americana: Sabría también, que en América no hay, ni puede haber por ahora, literatos de profesión, porque todos los hombres capaces, a causa del estado de revolución en que se encuentran, absorbidos por la acción o por las necesidades materiales de una existencia precaria, no pueden consagrarse a la meditación y recogimiento que exige la creación literaria...

Cuando se habla del DOGMA SOCIALISTA de Esteban Echeverría, unos entienden referirse tan solo a las Palabras Simbólicas y a su comentario de 1837, en que la Asociación de Mayo concretó los ideales de la nueva generación argentina; otros entienden referirse a la reedición de ese documento, que Echeverría hizo en Montevideo el año 1846, precediéndolo de una Ojeada Retrospectiva sobre el movimiento intelectual ocu-rrido en el Plata desde el manifiesto de la mencionada Asociación; y otros -los menos- parecen comprender bajo ese mismo título, todas las páginas que, antes y después de 1846; escribió Echeverría para propagar o aclarar o defender lo que su escuela dio en llamar el DOGMA SOCIALISTA. Como se verá en el presente volumen, yo me he decidido por este último criterio, completando las breves páginas del manifiesto inicial , con las otras que le sirven de comentario, como el propio autor lo indicara en la edición de Montevideo, uno de cuyos raros ejem-plares tengo sobre mi mesa de trabajo, al escribir esta noticia preliminar.
