Este estudio intenta limitar al dialecto geográficamente y explicar que es lo que se entiende con español rioplatense y qué lo transforma en una variante única. Esto se hará mediante la recopilación de las características lingüísticas particulares del rioplatense, identificando además las subdivisiones que existen y reconociendo las diferencias entre ellas. Para explicar todo esto, hay que poner énfasis en las siguientes preguntas: ¿Cuáles son las características del rioplatense que hacen de este una variante única del español? ¿Cuáles es la situación demográfica e histórica de la región? ¿Qué diferencias diatópicas son reconocibles en su lingüística? Primero, para explicar las características del rioplatense se utilizará una diversa bibliografía, la cual ayudará a identificar su lugar geográfico y características particulares. Es necesario entender su expansión geográfica para poder tener un mejor acercamiento al tema, y no caer en una idea abstracta del tema. Las características nos servirán para definir nuestro sujeto de estudio para luego así poder compararlo. Este paso será la introducción hacia un estudio más avanzado del dialecto. Segundo, se analizará la geografía política de la región así como su historia. Así se podrá analizar las situaciones extralingüísticas que contribuyeron a la división de esta variante del español y formular teorías del por qué estas diferencias existen, así como demostrar sus similitudes, sobre todo en el léxico. Se incluirán temas como inmigraciones y contacto de lenguajes. Tercero, gracias a la información recibida en la primera y segunda parte del trabajo, se intentará concretizar las diferencias diatópicas que existen en el rioplatense, dividiéndolo en dos grupos, el bonaerense (porteño) y el español uruguayo.
