Este libro es una recopilación de escritos dedicados a la arquitectura religiosa contemporánea, es decir, la producida en el entorno de los últimos cien años. Todos ellos han sido publicados previamente y han sido revisados para la presente edición. Los textos que aquí se presentan comparten una misma idea de fondo: la necesidad de encontrar una fundamentación sólida para poder explicar y construir las iglesias de nuestros días. En efecto. Uno de los problemas más delicados que han afrontar la arquitectura religiosa occidental en el arranque de este nuevo milenio es la identidad del edificio de culto cristiano. Las experiencias globalizadoras reclaman, de las personas y de las instituciones, tanto de tipo conceptual como situacional. No cabe duda de que la facilidad de acceso a los sistemas culturales ajenos posibilita múltiples intercambios, y entre ellos, la transferencia de valores y el diálogo interreligioso. En este sentido, la afluencia de emigrantes a los países ricos -y fuertemente secularizados- de Europa y América del Norte, los brotes de fundamentalismo en distintas partes del mundo o la apertura religiosa del Extremo Oriente plantean numerosos interrogantes. En los últimos años han surgido diversas iniciativas que es preciso conocer para poder comprender hacia donde se dirige la arquitectura religiosa contemporánea, en su eterna búsqueda sobre lo permanente de su identidad. Estos artículos ilustran la situación en la que nos encontramos.

"How do we understand religious spaces? What is their role or function within specific religious traditions or with respect to religious experience? This handbook brings together thirty-seven authors addressing these questions, using a range of methods to analyze specific spaces or types of spaces around the world and across time. Their methods are grounded in many disciplines: religious studies and religion, anthropology, archaeology, architectural history and architecture, cultural and religious history, sociology, gender and women's studies, geography, and political science, resulting in a distinctly interdisciplinary collection. These essays are snapshots, each offering a specific way to think about the religious space(s) under consideration: Roman shrines, Jewish synagogues, Christian churches, Muslim and Catholic shrines, indigenous spaces in Central America and East Africa, cemeteries, memorials, and others. They are organized here by geographical region rather than tradition, to emphasized the cultural roots of religion and religious spaces. Several overarching principles emerge from these snapshots. The authors demonstrate that religious spaces are simultaneously individual and collective, personal, and social; that they are influenced by culture, tradition, and immediate circumstances; and that they participate in various relationships of power. Most importantly, these essays demonstrate that religious spaces do not simply provide a convenient background for religious action but are also constituent of religious meaning and religious experience, that is, they play an active role in creating, expressing, broadcasting, maintaining, and transforming religious meaning, experience"--

Thus, in one hand, the autor is focus in the detailed study of the architect Francisco Gil González (1905-1962; graduate in 1966) life and works. This artist designed rationalism and historicism buildings that, along with some of his modern proposals, extolled him as one of the best architects of Salamanca during the XX Century. In the other hand, this work shows a complete display of the urban normative and also the study of the buildings that were erected during those years by others architects. Así, la autora se centra, por un lado, en el estudio pormenorizado de la vida y obra del arquitecto salmantino Francisco Gil González (1905-1962; titulado en 1966). Este facultativo destacó por la calidad de sus diseños de estilo racionalista e historicista y por la modernidad de algunas de sus propuestas, lo que, en conjunto, le encumbró como uno de los mejores arquitectos de Salamanca del siglo XX. Por otro lado, la obra también incorpora una completa exposición de la normativa urbanística aprobada en esos años, así como los inmuebles proyectados por un nutrido grupo de arquitectos a los que se han dedicado completas biografías en las que se incluyen sus etapas arquitectónicas.

Con motivo del 1.100 aniversario de San Rosendo, evangelizador de las tierras gallegas, el Obispado de Ourense y el Colegio Oficial de Arquitectos de Galicia, convocaron en 2007 el I Congreso Internacional de Arquitectura Religiosa «Arquitecturas de lo sagrado. Memoria y proyecto». El Congreso estuvo dedicado a debatir la incidencia de la liturgia como programa en el espacio de culto, y a reflexionar sobre el espacio sagrado a través de algunas de las obras más significativas de la arquitectura religiosa contemporánea. Por sus peculiares características programático-espaciales, las iglesias son edificios que reflejan muy bien el contexto en el que nacen. No es necesario referirse a tiempos demasiado lejanos para constatar el importante papel que los edificios sagrados han desempeñado en el desarrollo de las comunidades. Sin ir más lejos, tanto en la Europa posterior a la Segunda Guerra Mundial como en la posguerra española, la relación entre la sociedad y la ciudad ha estado caracterizada por la presencia integradora de los edificios de culto y, en concreto, de los centros parroquiales. En una realidad multicultural sometida al cambio constante como la nuestra, el valor de estos lugares vuelve a tener una importancia significativa, colmatando con su cercanía y sencillez el vacío dejado por otras instituciones. Por otra parte, como todo lo que está sometido al paso del tiempo, el edificio sacro siempre tiene necesidad de actualizarse. Tras el azaroso periodo que siguió al Concilio Vaticano II, conviene preguntarse si siguen siendo las iglesias lugares de adoración y de culto, o si tienen otro significado. Si hemos olvidado su dimensión trascendente para centrarnos en la social. O incluso hasta qué punto la investigación arquitectónica y la praxis litúrgica tienen una repercusión real en la renovación tipológica de las iglesias. ¿Qué sugieren los liturgistas y qué proponen los arquitectos contemporáneos? ¿Qué repercusiones espaciales tendrá el reciente Motu proprio «Summorum pontificum»? El I Congreso Internacional de Arquitectura Religiosa «Arquitecturas de lo sagrado. Memoria y proyecto» ha sido un buen momento para reflexionar sobre las nuevas perspectivas que se abren a la arquitectura religiosa en el futuro más inmediato.
