Este libro es un intento de establecer las principales líneas en cuanto al conocimiento de los aspectos esenciales de la guerra vividos por la sociedad catalana, y por extensión de la española, en un periodo clave de su historia. La guerra de los Segadores y la guerra de Sucesión de España en su frente catalán han sido siempre los dos momentos capitales de la historia de la guerra en la Época Moderna en Cataluña (y de la propia Historia de Cataluña durante dichas centurias), pero el largo periodo que iría de 1652 y hasta 1700, además de los años intermedios de la guerra de Sucesión, entre 1707 y 1712, apenas si han interesado del mismo modo. Una de las intenciones de este libro es, pues, conocer cómo se percibió la guerra (contra los Borbones, ya estuviesen estos reinando en París o bien en Madrid y París a la vez) desde el Principado a partir de 1652. Y, al mismo tiempo, entender mejor la gestación de lo que podríamos llamar el «problema de Cataluña» desde el punto de vista —y los intereses— de la Corona (estuviese esta bajo el control de la dinastía de los Austrias o los Borbones).
