Mexican artist Martín Soto Climént (b. 1977) makes the lyrical potential of found objects and images the core of his multifaceted conceptual practice, which manifests in works ranging from object-based sculptures and installations to photography, and, recently, painting. Soto Climént?s particular attunement to the associative and affective properties of objects and images enables him to destabilize their conventional reading and to radicalize their potential for new meaning. Drawing out the appealing, sexual, or otherwise heightened qualities of objects, the artist triggers our own structural and linguistic perceptions of desire.0This monograph constitutes the first major assessment of Climént?s fascinatingly rich and intriguingly complex practice. Spanning 20 years of work, it chronicles his exhibition history and provides documentation on his most important groups of works. With contributions by Giorgia von Albertini, Susan L. Aberth, Veit Loers, and Chris Sharp.

An exile returns to Spain from France to find that he is repelled by the fascism of Franco's Spain and drawn to the world of Muslim culture. In Marks of Identity, Juan Goytisolo, one of Spain's most celebrated novelists, speaks for a generation of Spaniards who were small children during the Spanish Civil War, grew up under a stifling dictatorship, and, in many cases, emigrated in desperation from their dying country. Upon his return, the narrator confronts the most controversial political, religious, social, and sexual issues of our time with ferocious energy and elegant prose. Torn between the Islamic and European worlds around him, he finds both ultimately unsatisfactory. In the end, only displacement survives.

One of the BBC's '100 Novels That Shaped Our World' A gorgeous clothbound edition of Jean Rhys's great masterpiece of desire and madness in the Caribbean, published for the novel's fiftieth anniversary. Born into the oppressive, colonialist society of 1930s Jamaica, white Creole heiress Antoinette Cosway meets a young Englishman who is drawn to her innocent beauty and sensuality. After their marriage, however, disturbing rumours begin to circulate which poison her husband against her. Caught between his demands and her own precarious sense of belonging, Antoinette is inexorably driven towards madness, and her husband into the arms of another novel's heroine. This classic study of betrayal, a seminal work of postcolonial literature, is Jean Rhys's brief, beautiful masterpiece. 'She took one of the works of genius of the nineteenth century and turned it inside-out to create one of the works of genius of the twentieth century' Michele Roberts, The Times

Identity And Translation Trouble written by Ivana Hostová and has been published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-08-21 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

Besides providing a thorough overview of advances in the concept of identity in Translation Studies, the book brings together a variety of approaches to identity as seen through the prism of translation. Individual chapters are united by the topic and their predominantly cultural approach, but they also supply dynamic impulses for the reader, since their methodologies, level of abstraction, and subject matter differ. The theoretical impulses brought together here include a call for the ecology of translational attention, a proposal of transcultural and farcical translation and a rethinking of Bourdieu’s habitus in terms of František Miko’s experiential complex. The book also offers first-hand insights into such topics as post-communist translation practices, provides sociological insights into the role politics played during state socialism in the creation of fields of translated fiction and the way imported fiction was able to subvert the intentions of the state, gives evidence of the struggles of small locales trying to be recognised though their literature, and draws links between local theory and more widely-known concepts.

les Houches This Winter School on "The Physics and Fabrication of Microstructures" originated with a European industrial decision to investigate in some detail the potential of custom-designed microstructures for new devices. Beginning in 1985, GEC and THOMSON started a collaboration on these subjects, supported by an ESPRIT grant from the Commission of the European Com munity. To the outside observer of the whole field, it appears clear that the world effort is very largely based in the United States and Japan. It also appears that cooperation and dissemination of results are very well organised outside Europe and act as a major influence on the development of new concepts and devices. In Japan, a main research programme of the Research and Development for Basic Technology for Future Industries is focused on "Future Electron Devices". In Japan and in the United States, many workshops are organised annually in order to bring together the major specialists in industry and academia, allowing fast dissemination of advances and contacts for setting up cooperative efforts.

Social Policy And Social Justice written by Michael Reisch and has been published by Cognella Academic Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-08-06 with categories.

Providing the breadth of a standard text and the depth of a contributed volume, Social Policy and Social Justice: Meeting the Challenges of a Diverse Society is built on a clear, conceptual social justice framework and provides up-to-date analyses of contemporary social policy issues, written by experts in their particular areas of research and practice. The book uses case studies and rigorous analysis to explore the relationship of social policy to economic, social, and culture transformation and the ongoing conflict between universal and population-specific conceptions of social welfare. The third edition addresses recent dramatic changes in social policy. It includes an assessment of policies adopted by the Obama administration, policy changes proposed and implemented by the Trump administration and Congress related to the country's social welfare system, and the effects of the Trump administration's immigration and criminal justice policies on communities of color. The #MeToo and Black Lives Matter movements, recent changes in the electoral landscape, and timely Supreme Court decisions are also addressed. Additionally, the text considers the future of Social Security and Medicare, employment policies, health and mental health policies, and more. Throughout, the text explores the impact of economic and social changes on conceptions of need and helping, the role of social policies and social services in promoting or preventing social and political change, and the ways in which cultural, racial, ethnic, gender, and religious identity affect the development and implementation of social policies. Social Policy and Social Justice is ideal for undergraduate and graduate social work courses, as well as classes in cognate fields such as nursing, public policy, and political science.
