El Grande Oriente es la cuarta novela de la segunda serie de los Episodios Nacionales de Benito Pérez Galdós. La odisea del protagonista, Salvador Monsalud, le sirve al autor para retratarnos el ambiente de las sociedades secretas de aquellos convulsos años del Trienio Liberal. La obra recoge, en su título, el nombre de una activa sociedad secreta que intervino poderosamente en los acontecimientos que agitaron la vida política española entre 1820 y 1823. Después del pronunciamiento de Riego, el rey Fernando VII tiene que soportar un gobierno liberal, pero en la sombra conspira para que cambie esta situación. De ese modo surgen los clubes políticos y la masonería vive su mejor época. El autor aprovecha la acción para describirnos de la forma más sarcástica y ridícula posible los rituales y grados tanto de la masonería como de los comuneros, que al fin no son más que un calco a la española de los rituales y grados de los masones. En paralelo, nuestro héroe Monsalud tomará partido contra sus propias convicciones debido a su sentido de la lealtad y del honor. Y así, conspirará para salvar a un amigo absolutista, encerrado en prisión por conspirar contra el Gobierno. Lo conseguirá, pero a costa de renunciar a su amor.

Antes de que pueda socorrerle, Gil de la Cuadra es arrestado y condenado a muerte, por lo que Monsalud, se quedar� cuidando de su hija, mientras mueve influencias en los c�rculos mas�nicos a los que secretamente pertenece para liberar al padre.
