La autora asume el desafío de ofrecer una nueva lectura de la vida y vicisitudes de Francisco de Miranda, desde el momento en que abandona Venezuela, con apenas 20 años, hasta el triste desenlace que representó para su vida el fin de la Primera República, su entrega a las autoridades españolas, la prisión y su posterior fallecimiento en La Carraca. El libro comienza con el acontecimiento del cual deriva su título: un incómodo y escandaloso incidente promovido por los criollos principales de la capital contra su padre, Sebastián Miranda, tenido como individuo de inferior condición y -para mayor escarnio- casado con una panadera. En sus páginas se busca trascender, sin soslayar, la biografía política para prestar atención a los detalles de la vida cotidiana del Generalísimo: sus sentimientos, dolencias y caprichos; su vida amorosa, su vastísima cultura, sus viajes, su inagotable curiosidad, sus prisiones, persecuciones y fracasos y muchos otros aspectos que formaron parte de su agitada existencia. "Todos ellos, y seguramente muchos otros, son y seguirán siendo fuente fecunda de relatos, aproximaciones y acuciosos estudios sobre este personaje singular, cuya mayor cualidad fue, sin lugar a dudas, su constancia y empecinamiento en propiciar, aun a costa de su propia vida, la independencia de todo un continente. No lo logró en vida, pero murió a causa de ella".

Francisco de Miranda sigue siendo un personaje enigmático y, tal vez por eso mismo, uno de los más hechizantes de la historiografía nacional. Su intensa existencia trasluce, no obstante, un gran afán por comprender y trascender su tiempo y circunstancia, así como su lucha sin descanso por contribuir a la fundación de una Venezuela republicana. La suma de desilusiones y su trágico desencuentro con la sociedad criolla terminaron configurando a un prócer romántico del que acaso nunca tengamos la biografía definitiva. Así lo entiende Edgardo Mondolfi Gudat en estas "ocho contiendas", tan sesudas como entretenidas, con las que logra un riquísimo acercamiento a la inquietante seducción del genio mirandino.

The Hispanic and Anglo worlds are often portrayed as the Cain and Abel of Western culture, antagonistic and alien to each other.
