When captain James P. Orne and his crew kill a strange and enormous animal in the sea, they are confused. They have never seen anything like this before – the animal looks like a giant sea monster. They start to make money by letting people see the corpse of the animal. Animal experts, however, tell them that the monster was actually only a baby. One day, the corpse disappears... and the animal will have its revenge. H.P. Lovecraft (1890–1937) was an American horror writer. His best known works include ‘The Call of Cthulhu’ and ‘the Mountains of Madness’. Most of his work was originally published in pulp magazines, and Lovecraft rose into fame only after his death at the age of 46. He has had a great influence in both horror and science fiction genres.

Sailors kill a 50 foot creature at sea after a lengthy battle. The creature bears strange anatomical irregularities such as a single large eye and rudimentary forelegs and six-toed feet in place of pectoral fins. After inspection by marine biologists, it is revealed to be just a juvenile. The captain who captured the creature tours the coast and profits from the corpse of the deceased creature. As the captain attempts to finish his business at Martin's Beach, a group of swimmers are attacked. The captain and others attempt to rescue the victims but it is too late. The good samaritans and the captain are hypnotized and pulled into the water by the creature's apparently vengeful mother, to the horror of an onlooking crowd.

Dado que la Ciencia Ficción, sobre todo, en su versión más Pulp apareció en este tipo de revistas de formato barato, hemos dedicado todo un año a iniciar un proyecto de colaboración de diversos autores, escritores del género con el único objetivo de la divulgación y el disfrute tanto de lectores como de los colaboradores. Así nace Fiction News un periódico que inventa la realidad, que propone noticias, artículos y relatos de CiFi pero también del género de Terror y la Fantasía. Ha sido, en algunos momentos, difícil mantenerlo a lo largo de los meses, sobre todo, porque insistir en publicar un periódico digital que no llega a mucha gente, y cuyo público es reducido es, en muchas ocasiones, una ardua tarea. Pero, no ha quedado tan mal y no nos gusta nada quejarnos. Con y alrededor de Lovecraft cuaja de manera definitiva el cuento de horror materialista. En este tipo de narración, el horror acecha desde la más remota antigüedad o el lejano futuro, en las profundidades insondables del océano, los abismos del espacio exterior, o en lugares apartados de nuestro planeta, tales como el Tíbet, las selvas amazónicas o el desierto del Gobi. Incluso en dimensiones paralelas a la nuestra. Lovecraft comenzó a escribir cuentos de horror de raíces más convencionales para luego ir evolucionando hacia el horror materialista. La expresión última de esa evolución es lo que llamamos los mitos de Cthulhu. Los relatos que se considera que forman parte de los mitos son también evolutivos —y aglutinantes,— y hay una metamorfosis clara desde los primeros a los que escribió poco antes de su muerte. Fueron emergiendo y consolidándose en la narrativa de Lovecraft de manera paulatina. Los mitos de Cthulhuson además aglutinantes porque los cuentos que los conforman incorporaron muchos elementos creados por diversos artistas de los cuales incorporó Lovecraft sin dudar a sus siguientes cuentos. Una y otra vez, se incide en la idea de que nuestro mundo, tal como lo conocemos, no es más que una ínfima burbuja perdida en el espacio y a la deriva en el tiempo. El espacio exterior, el pasado remoto, el futuro lejano e incluso otras dimensiones sirven de cubil a dioses de increíble poder y a abominaciones que acechan el momento de irrumpir en nuestra realidad.
