La Parte I se ocupa de las realidades económicas y sociales de la época. Se abre con el estudio de una de las raras constantes que es posible hallar en el XVI: la preeminencia social de que disfrutan los nobles (cap. 1). Después, esto se pone en relación con los síntomas de expansión en ese mundo social, la exploración ultramarina y el crecimiento de la población (cap. 2). Cronológica y metodológicamente estos temas preceden a una revisión del desarrollo político que se concreta en la teoría del Estado y en las manifestaciones prácticas del poder estatal (cap. 3). Las ciudades (cap. 4), que fueron tan importantes al propiciar la Reforma, nos ofrecen un puente natural hacia la Parte II, que pretende ser una exposición de lo que dijeron los principales reformadores religiosos en el contexto del Renacimiento. Los capítulos de esta Parte II cubren el Renacimiento con especial referencia al humanismo y las artes visuales (cap. 5), el antimonacato de la primera Reforma (cap. 6), los avances -o la falta de ellos- de la Reforma (cap. 7) y el resurgir católico (cap. 8). Cada uno de estos capítulos está dividido en cuatro partes y, en cada caso, la última de ellas es una serie de apuntes sobre las repercusiones sociales de las nuevas ideas y la forma en la que las ideas fueron modeladas y modificaron el medio social. Los temas así tratados son la relación de la educación con el pensamiento humanista (cap. 5), la importancia de la Reforma para el sacramento del matrimonio (cap. 6), qué fuerzas redujeron el impacto social de la doctrina protestante (cap. 7) y qué sirvió, por contra, para incrementar el impacto del resurgir católico (cap. 8). La lucha ideológica en el seno de la sociedad en general se vincula así a los principales conflictos armados de la época, que constituyen el contenido de la Parte II. Las guerras mismas son presentadas en el seno de un violento y peligroso medio social, agravándose el peligro que representaban debido a la centralización política (cap. 9). Las guerras dinásticas de la primera mitad del siglo (cap. 10) son representadas como nexo de unión entre los conflictos pontificio-imperialistas que se vivieron en la Edad Media y las Guerras de Religión. Antes de ocuparse de estas últimas, se centran en la aparición del Occidente moderno como entidad reconocible a través de la serie de conflictos mantenidos con los turcos otomanos y de las diferencias culturales que éstos revelan (cap. 11). El capítulo final (cap. 12) se dedica a las guerras civiles entabladas dentro de la misma Cristiandad, insistiendo la Conclusión en la inmensidad de los logros españoles y sus paradójicas implicaciones para el futuro de Europa como civilización global.
