According to data available at this time the first draughts book written in Valencia in 1547 was titled El Ingenio o juego de marro, de punta o Damas. This is indicated by Nicolao Antonio, Bibliotheca Hispana Vetus, 1696 Volume I, page 165. I am able to write about this draughts book, because I came to possession of a copy of this book. The cost was rather high, but it was worthwhile to fly to Amsterdam in 1988 to obtain this copy, of which the original is now in unknown hands in Madrid. The positions of the diagrams, letters, and language that I could reproduce here are nearly identical to the original book, thus diagrams with almost the same nice decoration and with almost the same old Spanish letters and the same language of the XV century. Furthermore I reproduced the same positions of the diagrams, thus using the white squares for the pawns and having the long diagonal on the right hand. The drawing of the pawns and Dama are exactly the same as appearing in the original book.

Every checkers player knows about Woldouby's famous position. This 21 year-old Senegalese drew a lot of attention in Paris in 1910 when he won against all challengers in his store located in the Senegalese village of the Exposition of Jardin d'Acclimatation zoologique. No one understood how this player could win all the games that fast. After Amadou Kandie Woldouby was the second African who participated in a checkers tournament in Paris since he became the city champion in 1911. In 1911 he left France and no one knew his whereabouts since then. In this biography we show that Weiss' golpe (shot) actually was Woldouby's golpe, since he won against Isidore Weiss with it. On the other hand we want to show that Woldouby returned to Senegal in 1911 to take the place of a checkers runner-up in 1913. His biography deserves a worthy place in the history of checkers, as he was the prominent predecessor of the famous Senegalese checkers player Baba Sy.

Since 1987 we have defended in articles that the Spanish queen Isabella I of Castile (Isabel la Católica) was the new chess queen (dama) on the chessboard. Other publications were in 1990, 1994, 1997, and 2004. And of course, Marilyn Yalom studied our book during her visit to the National Library in The Hague (Holland) before she wrote Birth of the Chess Queen in 2004. In her book one cannot see that in 1987, 1990, and 1994 we already published material about Isabel la Catolica (Isabel I of Castile) being the new powerful dama or chess queen on the chessboard. In other words we can state here that we have been studying Spanish history and its chess literature for over 30 years. Since 2003 we have also known the development of the new bishop in chess.

The modern game of chess started around 1475 in Spain when the queen and bishop got a much more powerful move. It was called ""Mad Queen Chess."" These new rules quickly spread throughout western Europe and in Spain. The enhanced move for the chess queen started after the coronation of the powerfull queen of Spain Isabella I. The historical records duly note that Queen Isabella I was crowned with the sword of justice raised in front of her, and the sceptre and throne were given to her. This allusion to the real-world event is so clear within the Scachs d'Amor poem to Isabella's actual coronation that the inspiration of Queen Isabella for the new chess queen and powerfull dama of the draughts game is unquestionable. The Spaniards like the Moors, played a game on the board of lines and called it alquerque. The game became modern draughts through being transferred to the chessboard around that time. This book is the result of at least 30 years investigations in the Spanish archives

This is the first bibliography in English of the protonotary Juan Ramírez de Lucena (1430-1504) who was one of the ambassadors of the Catholic monarchs. He was the father of Lucena, the writer of a chess book that was published in Salamanca in 1997. Knowing the biography of the protonotary and his activities in Italy and France in the highest sphere of society it is clear that his son Lucena could take advantage of this, because his father had opened the door in many places. No doubt that during the life of the protonotary Juan Ramírez de Lucena his son visited these places in Italy and France, as Lucena himself confirmed in the chess treaty of 1497.

Lucena era hijo de Juan Ramírez de Lucena, embajador de los Reyes Católicos. Gracias a los viajes de su padre Lucena pudo viajar a Italia y Francia y conocer las innovaciones con respecto al ajedrez y al teatro. Nacido en Aragón, fue en sus años de estudiante de leyes en Salamanca cuando conoció a Juan del Encina. Entre ambos se desarrolló una amistad que iba a durar toda la vida. Lucena estaba trabajando en la imprenta de Nebrija en los años 1493-1495, donde le ayudó con ciertos términos para su diccionario de latín de 1495. Al parecer, Lucena intentaba traducir y editar en castellano libros en latín y así vemos aparecer: Mujeres ilustres en romance (1494) Fábulas de Esopo (1495), los libros de Aeneas Silvo Piccolomini (1496), Repetición de amores y Arte de Ajedrez (1497), Vita Beata (1499), El Jardin de nobles doncellas (1500). Poco después iba a dirigir y editar en Italia las nuevas cenas en la obra de Calisto y Melibea con la valiosa ayuda de su gran amigo Juan del Encina.

La Orden de Santiago ayudó constantemente a sus respectivos Reyes en la conquista de territorios. Ayudaron a conquistar el reino de Murcia y en 1243, por el tratado de Alcaraz, el Valle de Ricote se incorporó a la Corona de Castilla. En aquella época el Valle de Ricote contaba con los pueblos de Abarán, Negra, Ojós, Ricote y Puerto de Losilla. A partir de 1285 la máxima autoridad de la encomienda era el comendador. Ricote era por los siglos XII y XIII cabeza del Valle que lleva su nombre y el comendador tenía allí su sede. Hasta ahora el conocimiento que tenemos de nuestros comendadores es muy limitado, puesto que no hay libros que hablen sobre sus actividades. El propósito de este libro ha sido llenar este vacío con el fin de que sepamos poco a poco quiénes eran los comendadores del Valle de Ricote y como era la vida de los mudéjares en Blanca. La investigación ha durado bastantes años, pero ahora por fin sabemos algo más de este siglo XIV, siglo tan difícil para escribir nuestra historia.

La Santa Inquisición se valía antes del año 1586 de la persona Pedro Cachopo, escribano del valle de Ricote, para así poder llegar al sujeto en cada rincón del territorio del valle. Extraño es el hecho de que el inquisidor Hernando Manrique - en otros sitios le llaman Jerónimo Manrique - tuvo una casa en Blanca. ¿Porqué quiso vivir este inquisidor justamente entre los moriscos blanqueños? Este inquisidor fue denunciado por cohecho al recibir numerosos regalos; sobre todo, puercos, jabalís, pescados, salchichones y ropas. Tampoco era hombre que cumplía con su obligación de visitar cárceles cada quince días. ¿Que justicia podían esperar los moriscos del valle de un personaje así de la Santa Inquisición de Murcia? ¿Cuántas reuniones no ha tenido el odioso escribano, Pedro Cachopo con el inquisidor Manrique? No lo sabemos, pero conociendo ya mejor a Cachopo deberían haber sido muchísimas, pues de otra forma no se puede explicar la calamidad que estaba por venir al valle.

Siempre me ha fascinado la historia de los pueblos y cuando llegué por la primera vez a Blanca, en 1969, lógicamente quise saber aspectos de su historia. Sin embargo, hubo una leyenda que despertó forzosamente mi curiosidad sobre este pueblo: su nombre femenino Blanca. Me contaron que se debía a una reina, llamada Blanca, que vivía hace muchos siglos en el castillo. Sé que las leyendas siempre son historias deformadas, pero el nombre de Blanca perfectamente pudo ser de una reina y así hice mi investigación. Además, se sabe que la última vez que el nombre de Negra entra en la historia de esta región, es en el año 1315; y la primera vez que consta el nombre de Blanca, es en el año 1382. Por tanto, se tiene una laguna y misterio de 67 años, donde no se menciona, en documento alguno, el nombre de Negra o Blanca. Por otro lado, se sabe que la villa de Blanca antiguamente pertenecía a la Orden de Santiago y por lógica el cambio del nombre debería corresponder a dicha Orden.
