By the middle of the fourteenth century, Christian control of the Iberian Peninsula extended to the borders of the emirate of Granada, whose Muslim rulers acknowledged Castilian suzerainty. No longer threatened by Moroccan incursions, the kings of Castile were diverted from completing the Reconquest by civil war and conflicts with neighboring Christian kings. Mindful, however, of their traditional goal of recovering lands formerly ruled by the Visigoths, whose heirs they claimed to be, the Castilian monarchs continued intermittently to assault Granada until the late fifteenth century. Matters changed thereafter, when Fernando and Isabel launched a decade-long effort to subjugate Granada. Utilizing artillery and expending vast sums of money, they methodically conquered each Naṣrid stronghold until the capitulation of the city of Granada itself in 1492. Effective military and naval organization and access to a diversity of financial resources, joined with papal crusading benefits, facilitated the final conquest. Throughout, the Naṣrids had emphasized the urgency of a jihād waged against the Christian infidels, while the Castilians affirmed that the expulsion of the "enemies of our Catholic faith" was a necessary, just, and holy cause. The fundamentally religious character of this last stage of conflict cannot be doubted, Joseph F. O'Callaghan argues.

El libro que ahora se ofrece al lector forma parte de lo que en su día fue una parte significativa de la tesis doctoral de su autor, presentada en la Universidad Complutense de Madrid en noviembre de 2005, y que llevaba por título La burocracia regia durante el reinado de Juan II de Castilla: estudio prosopográfico e itinerario. Habiéndose publicado recientemente lo que de aquella tesis se dedicaba al itinerario de la corte1, ahora sale de la imprenta el estudio del aparato burocrático regio y su análisis prosopográfico. Como es bien sabido, las gentes del Medievo nada supieron de la burocracia, o mejor dicho, nada supieron de la palabra burocracia. Se trata de un vocablo resultante de la unión entre la etimología francesa bureau y de la griega cracia que permite aludir de manera especialmente precisa, entre otras acepciones, al conjunto de empleados públicos y de funciones y procesos relacionados con la ejecución administrativa de las decisiones políticas. Su uso en la lengua española se produce de una manera muy tardía. Hay que esperar, de hecho, a autores del siglo XIX, ya en su segunda mitad, tales como Benito Pérez Galdós, Emilio Castelar o Vicente de la Fuente, para encontrar manifestaciones de su utilización

The Politics of Emotion explores the intersection of powerful emotional states—love, melancholy, grief, and madness—with gender and political power on the Iberian Peninsula from the Middle Ages to the early modern period. Using an array of sources—literary texts, medical treatises, and archival documents—Nuria Silleras-Fernandez focuses on three royal women: Isabel of Portugal (1428–1496), queen-consort of Castile; Isabel of Aragon (1470–1498), queen-consort of Portugal; and Juana of Castile (1479–1555), queen of Castile and its empire. Each of these women was perceived by their contemporaries as having gone "mad" as a result of excessive grief, and all three were related to Isabel the Catholic (1451–1504), queen of Castile and a woman lauded in her time as a paragon of reason. Through the lives and experiences of these royal women and the observations, judgments, and machinations of their families, entourages, and circles of writers, chronicles, courtiers, moralists, and physicians in their orbits, Silleras-Fernandez addresses critical questions about how royal women in Iberia were expected to behave, the affective standards to which they were held, and how perceptions about their emotional states influenced the way they were able to exercise power.
