La Guerra de los Mil Días no ha sido analizada a fondo en sus diversas causas, desarrollo y efectos, ni se conocen sus laberintos más intrigantes como lo amerita un tema de tan hondo significado para la historia nacional. Guerra en la que liberales y conservadores pretenden dirimir en el campo de batalla los conflictos en los que se han enzarzado en el siglo XIX, en donde el liberalismo a partir de Santander pretende aniquilar los restos del antiguo régimen monárquico, que persisten en la mentalidad goda o conservadora que acepta las reglas de juego republicanas, sin renunciar a su visión hispánica del mundo ni el respeto por las jerarquías. El radicalismo liberal no se fundamenta entonces en una verdadera clase superior, una elite de gobierno capaz de fomentar el orden y estructurar una sociedad en torno de los deberes de Estado y a la alta política como lo hizo, por ejemplo, la burguesía francesa en un momento dado, prefiere combatir la tradición aristotélica y tomista que desarrolla el Libertador en su evolución política y que consagra la fronda aristocrática conservadora en la Constitución de 1843. Lejos de este ensayo la pretensión de ir a las raíces históricas de esa guerra, ni de intentar descifrar la psicología de la tendencia colectiva por la auto-aniquilación de Colombia que aflora cada cierto tiempo entre nosotros. Agresivos como fieras para combatir hasta el último cartucho y seguir con el arma blanca entre hermanos, e impotentes para defender el suelo patrio de la agresión extranjera. Se dan en esta Guerra de los Mil Días casos aberrantes de locura criminal, que iluminan el drama psicológico, la evolución mental y moral del combatiente atrapado en el salvajismo desenfrenado, como el caso de un pacífico y buen ciudadano dedicado al trabajo y amor paternal por los suyos, que, convertido de la noche a la mañana en soldado se aleja del hogar y embrutecido por la guerra se transforma en una fiera sedienta de venganza.
