La Inquisición de Occitania ha establecido su cuartel general en la antigua fortaleza cátara de Montsegur. El padre Tomás de Calatrava, de la orden de los Predicadores dominicos, dirige la institución pontificia con prudencia. Sus procedimientos férreos y su falta de escrúpulos a la hora de aplicar las leyes pontificias chocan con los métodos más suaves y pacientes de Tomás de Calatrava. Durante los meses de verano del año 1252, unos Perfectos cátaros recorren el Languedoc con la finalidad de dar esperanzas a sus creyentes, de hacerles ver que su fe sigue viva pese a la represión de la Iglesia. Estas esperanzas se fundamentan en unos documentos que transportan desde Lombardía hasta la última de las fortalezas que aún resiste los envites de las tropas del senescal real: Quéribus. Allí, en la frontera natural de los Pirineos, la religión de los Bons Òmes intenta sobrevivir. Los templarios, y los nobles desposeídos de sus pertenencias y sus tierras, los faidits, protegen a los Perfectos en su prédica. Un descubrimiento fortuito pone al descubierto una conspiración terrible, un secreto que, de conocerse, haría tambalearse los cimientos de la Iglesia católica. A causa de ese secreto, los cátaros están condenados a perecer entre las llamas de las innumerables hogueras que asolaron aquella próspera nación durante decenios. Entre esta trama, proscritos, cruzados de Francia sediciosos, y un extraño ser hirsuto que padece una enfermedad desconocida, la porfiria, que le hace sentir debilidad a la luz del sol, y que se alimenta en exclusiva de sangre fresca. A distinct European perspective on Asia emerged in the late Middle Ages. Early reports of a homogeneous "India" of marvels and monsters gave way to accounts written by medieval travelers that indulged readers' curiosity about far-flung landscapes and cultures without exhibiting the attitudes evident in the later writings of aspiring imperialists. Mining the accounts of more than twenty Europeans who made—or claimed to have made—journeys to Mongolia, China, India, Sri Lanka, and Southeast Asia between the mid-thirteenth and early sixteenth centuries, Kim Phillips reconstructs a medieval European vision of Asia that was by turns critical, neutral, and admiring. In offering a cultural history of the encounter between medieval Latin Christians and the distant East, Before Orientalism reveals how Europeans' prevailing preoccupations with food and eating habits, gender roles, sexualities, civility, and the foreign body helped shape their perceptions of Asian peoples and societies. Phillips gives particular attention to the texts' known or likely audiences, the cultural settings within which they found a foothold, and the broader impact of their descriptions, while also considering the motivations of their writers. She reveals in rich detail responses from European travelers that ranged from pragmatism to wonder. Fear of military might, admiration for high standards of civic life and court culture, and even delight in foreign magnificence rarely assumed the kind of secular Eurocentric superiority that would later characterize Orientalism. Placing medieval writing on the East in the context of an emergent "Europe" whose explorers sought to learn more than to rule, Before Orientalism complicates our understanding of medieval attitudes toward the foreign.

This book offers the first systematic analysis of the cultural and religious appropriation of Andalusian architecture by Spanish historians during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. To date this process of Christian appropriation has generally been discussed as a phenomenon of architectural hybridization. However, this was a period in which the construction of a Spanish national identity became a key focus of historical discourse. As a result, cultural hybridity encountered partial opposition from those seeking to establish cultural and religious homogeneity. Spain's Islamic past became a major concern in this period and historical writing served as the site for a complex negotiation of identity. Historians and antiquarians used a range of strategies to re-appropriate the meaning of medieval Islamic heritage as befitted the new identity of Spain as a Catholic monarchy and empire. On the one hand, the monuments' Islamic origin was subjected to historical revisions and re-identified as Roman or Phoenician. On the other hand, religious forgeries were invented that staked claims for buildings and cities having been founded by Christians prior to the arrival of the Muslims in Spain. Islamic stones were used as core evidence in debates that shaped the early development of archaeology, and they also became the centre of a historical controversy about the origin of Spain as a nation as well as its ecclesiastical history.
