The plebeians of Buenos Aires were crucial to the success of the revolutionary junta of May 1810, widely considered the start of the Argentine war of independence. Workshop of Revolution is a historical account of the economic and political forces that propelled the artisans, free laborers, and slaves of Buenos Aires into the struggle for independence. Drawing on extensive archival research in Argentina and Spain, Lyman L. Johnson portrays the daily lives of Buenos Aires plebeians in unprecedented detail. In so doing, he demonstrates that the world of Spanish colonial plebeians can be recovered in reliable and illuminating ways. Johnson analyzes the demographic and social contexts of plebeian political formation and action, considering race, ethnicity, and urban population growth, as well as the realms of work and leisure. During the two decades prior to 1810, Buenos Aires came to be thoroughly integrated into Atlantic commerce. Increased flows of immigrants from Spain and slaves from Africa and Brazil led to a decline in real wages and the collapse of traditional guilds. Laborers and artisans joined militias that defended the city against British invasions in 1806 and 1807, and they defeated a Spanish loyalist coup attempt in 1809. A gravely weakened Spanish colonial administration and a militarized urban population led inexorably to the events of 1810 and a political transformation of unforeseen scale and consequence.

Un recorrido que tiene escalas importantes para conocer la realidad y el pensamiento desarrollado a partir de esta en el mundo preindustrial, en sus componentes de mundo antiguo, de Grecia y Roma; del Medievo escolástico; del mercantilismo colmado del pragmatismo de los comerciantes; del amarre con la tierra del pensamiento fisiocrático hasta llegar a Adam Smith, colocado en el cruce de caminos entre ese mundo mercantil y tímidamente industrial; el mundo de la Revolución Industrial que alimenta y desafía el pensamiento de Ricardo, Marx y Stuart Mili, y luego de los socialistas utópicos y los marginalistas con sus tres ramas, de la escuela austriaca, de los walrasianos y de los anglosajones de la escuela de Cambridge. El recorrido nos lleva por el estallido político, económico y social que trajo la Primera Guerra Mundial y sus secuelas, de donde surge la propuesta de un capitalismo reformado con fuerte presencia del Estado, que es el pensamiento de Keynes, pensamiento que a su vez hará crisis en la década de los años setenta, abriendo paso al regreso del liberalismo clásico con Milton Freidman y la llamada revolución neoliberal. El libro concluye en un pasado próximo, en el 2007, hace una década, cuando estos planteamientos entran en crisis y se abre una discusión que continúa al orden del día sobre perspectivas de futuro, tanto de la realidad económica como de su análisis. Es un llamado a ese reencuentro del pensamiento económico con el rico y diverso tronco del conocimiento y análisis social, con el cual debe mantener un diálogo respetuoso, dejando de lado las vanas pretensiones de un economicismo pedante; que sea enriquecedor en el proceso inacabado de acercarnos a una plena comprensión de la condición humana y de sus expresiones sociales.

Eugenio Díaz Castro's family position (son of landowner), social standing (belonged to the «nobility» of the region) and cultural breadth (he studied for six years at the San Bartolomé to become a lawyer and fulfilled all the requirements established by law to obtain the degree in civil law) he was far from being the uncultivated farmer that José María Vergara y Vergara disseminated through rhetorical, ideological and social devices with the sole purpose of silencing his strong and problematic voice and nullify his lucid, solid thought so ideologically opposite his own. Díaz Castro was the ideologue of the literary journal El Mosaico that became one of the most important vehicles for disseminating Colombian literature in the second half of the 19th Century. In order to launch and secure publication, he offered the text of Manuela. A Bogota Novel to the journal. He was both an avid reader and had profound understanding of human nature traits that made him an insightful observer of social and political life. He never attributed his literary craft to «costumbrismo». Manuela's structure and composition combined French Realism of mid-century, liberalism and socialism to produce a novel of social criticism to reflect the inertia, apathy, ambition, and concupiscence of power the upper classes manifested, to control, and destroy other classes. Thus, the social reality of the region served as the referent, in such a way that it became unquestionably real and patent, with the purpose of demanding serious social reforms. This volume by prof. Flor Maria Rodriguez-Arenas, altogether with the critical edition «Manuela. Cartas al general Melo: guerra, política y sociedad en la Nueva Granada, 1854, transcribe más de doscientas noventa cartas que diversas personalidades le enviaron el general José María Melo o a uno de sus seguidores durante el tiempo que dominaron el centro del país, en entre mediados de abril y finales de noviembre de 1854. Estas misivas nos abren una ventana al interior del grupo que apoyó el golpe de Estado, evidenciando los conflictos y pugnas que tenían y de paso cuestionando esa visión homogénea con que se ha visto hasta ahora al melismo. Las cartas vienen acompañadas de un estudio introductorio que polemiza con las interpretaciones de izquierda, acerca del carácter revolucionario o socialista del golpe, resaltando el papel de los oficiales que apoyaron los eventos del 17 de abril hasta el 4 de diciembre de 1854, los cuales han sido invisibilizados por una historiografía que artesanizó los hechos.
