En la Biblia católica (Nacar-Calunga) figura como el primero de los Libros Sapienciales, ubicado entre II Macabeos y los Salmos, mientras que en el Tanaj hebreo, aparece entre los Proverbios y Cantar de los Cantares.
Su autor es desconocido, aunque la tradición lo atribuye a Moisés, el cual posiblemente conociera a Job durante su huida del Bajo Egipto.
Aunque algunos especialistas datan el libro entre el año 500 a. C. y el año 250 a. C., su cita en antiguos manuscritos judíos descartan tal opción. Popularmente se considera que este fue escrito alrededor del año 1473 a. C.

Quien haya emprendido la aventura de leer el libro de Job, volverá su última página con una sensación agridulce, una extraña mezcla de placer y frustración: placer, por haber tenido ante sus ojos una de las páginas más soberbias de la literatura religiosa de todos los tiempos; frustración, porque seguramente el libro de Job seguirá siendo para él un desconocido, como le ocurre al asiduo paseante de una hermosa ciudad, que siempre encontrará por entre sus calles algún rincón incógnito cuya belleza le anonada y le hace pensar. Se dice (con razón) que Job es un libro difícil. Su estilo poético, preñado, escueto y, en ocasiones, sintácticamente ambiguo, se une a una teología crítica de altos vuelos. El lector descubrirá asombrado a un hombre arrojado a la intemperie por un dios caprichoso, debatiéndose ante la aparente inmoralidad divina, acosado hasta la extenuación por tres teólogos gregarios y con el alma transida ante el silencio de su dios. Víctor Morla Asensio (1943) es licenciado en Filosofía, Teología y Filología Trilingüe, y doctor en Sagrada Escritura (Pontificio Instituto Bíblico, Roma). Ha ejercido como profesor de Pentateuco, Salmos, Literatura Sapiencial y Hebreo bíblico en la Facultad de Teología de la Universidad de Deusto, y de Filosofía Medieval y Lenguas Clásicas en la Facultad de Filosofía de la misma Universidad. Ha publicado El fuego en el Antiguo Testamento. Estudio de semántica lingüística (1988), Proverbios. Texto y comentario (1992), Eclesiástico. Texto y comentario (1992), Cien libros al servicio del estudio de la Biblia (1993), Libros sapienciales y otros escritos (1994), La Biblia por fuera y por dentro (2003), Poemas de amor y de deseo. Cantar de los Cantares (2004) y Lamentaciones (2004). Fue codirector del Diccionario bíblico hebreo-español (1994) y dirigió la revisión del Antiguo Testamento de la Nueva Biblia de Jerusalén (Bilbao 1998).
