En el dia está muy acreditada, segun dice el Sr. Saban en su edicion de la Historia de España del P. Mariana, la del erudito D. Martin de Ulloa individuo de la Academia Matritense de la Historia á quien ha sostenido el inglés Pinkerton en su obra intitulada Investigaciones sobre el ori gen ¿establecimiento de los Seytas o' Godos, que los pone entre el mar Caspio y el mar Negro, al norte de Persia. Sin embargo, la opinion comun y mas antigua ha sido quela patria primitiva de los Godos se hallaba en la Es caucia ó Escandinavia, region muy vasta que comprehen de ahora los estados de Suecia, de Noruega y Dinamarca. Pero siendo esta cuestion menos importanie que curiosa, y además imposible de resolver satisfactoriamente tratan dosede salvages, que no tienen domicilio fijo porque vi ven de la caza, de la pesca y de las plantas y frutos que la tierra inculta produce e5pontáneamente, murlando de lugar cuando en el que ocupan llegan a escasear estos re cursos tan precarios y ya no son bastantes para su sus tente, 6 son desalojados, por otros salvages mas fuertes que quieren establecerse allí; parece mal empleado el tiempo que se invierte en semejantes investigaciones. This volume addresses an important historiographical gap by assessing the respective contributions of tradition and foreign influences to the 19th century codification of criminal law. More specifically, it focuses on the extent of French influence – among others – in European and American civil law jurisdictions. In this regard, the book seeks to dispel a number of myths concerning the French model’s actual influence on European and Latin American criminal codes. The impact of the Napoleonic criminal code on other jurisdictions was real, but the scope and extent of its influence were significantly less than has sometimes been claimed. The overemphasis on French influence on other civil law jurisdictions is partly due to a fundamental assumption that modern criminal codes constituted a break with the past. The question as to whether they truly broke with the past or were merely a degree of reform touches on a difficult issue, namely, the dichotomy between tradition and foreign influences in the codification of criminal law. Scholarship has unfairly ignored this important subject, an oversight that this book remedies.

In June 1825 the Cuban countryside witnessed a large African-led slave rebellion -- a revolt that began a cycle of slave uprisings lasting until the mid-1840s. The Great African Slave Revolt of 1825 examines this movement and its participants for the first time, highlighting the significance of African warriors in New World plantation society. Unlike previous slave revolts -- led by alliances between free people of color and slaves, blacks and mulattoes, Africans and Creoles, and rural and urban populations -- only African-born men organized the uprising of 1825. From this year onwards, Barcia argues, slave uprisings in Cuba underwent a phase of Africanization that concluded only in the mid-1840s with the conspiracy of La Escalera, a large movement organized by free colored men with ample participation of the slave population. The Great African Slave Revolt of 1825 offers a detailed examination of the sociopolitical and economic background of the Matanzas rebellion, both locally and colonially. Based on extensive primary sources, particularly court records, the study provides a microhistorical analysis of the days that preceded this event, the uprising itself, and the days and months that followed. Barcia gives the Great African Revolt of 1825 its rightful place in the history of slavery in Cuba, the Caribbean, and the Americas.
