El maquiavelismo degollado, panegírico escrito por el jesuita Claudio Clemente en 1637, es mucho más que una curiosidad de la historia de las ideas políticas, representa en muchos sentidos la síntesis de la política del barroco; en él se conjugan las posturas más agresivas dirigidas a combatir el accionar «inmoral y anticristiano» de El príncipe de Maquiavelo, escrito en 1513. Así, desde la monarquía española, el imperio austriaco y el pontificado romano, se construye la senda de lo que fue el ideario político y moral de los Botero, Ribadeneyra, Mariana o Baronio junto con todas las representaciones simbólicas, los rituales y la parafernalia sobre la que se cimentó la autoridad de la Contrarreforma. Esta evocación permitirá al pensador del presente remontarse a las fuentes que se han servido de base a lo más radical del pensamiento político «conservador» que, a pesar de todo, sobrevive a la modernidad, haciéndose parte de ella, por lo menos dentro del ámbito cultural de influencia latina, de habla hispana y/o católica.

Arts of Perception offers a new account of a key period in Spanish history and culture and a fundamental reassessment of its major writers and intellectuals, including Gracián, Quevedo, Calderón, Saavedra Fajardo, López de Vega, and Sor Juana. Reading these figures in the context of European thought and the new science, and philosophy, the study considers how they developed various ‘arts of perception’ - complex perceptual strategies designed to overcome and exploit epistemic problems to enable an individual to act effectively in the moral, political, social or religious sphere. The study takes as its subject the distinctive epistemological mentality behind such ‘arts of perception’. This mentality was fostered by the creative interaction of scepticism and Stoicism, and found expression in the key concepts ser/parecer and engaño/desengaño. As well as offering new interpretations of specific major figures, Arts of Perception offers an interpretation of the mentality of an entire culture as it made the fraught transition to intellectual modernity. Precisamente por eso, está divido en cuatro secciones. La primera, a partir de una visión muy ceñida a los textos, se extiende en consideraciones sobre caligrafía, puntuación, censura, crítica textual y variantes del autor. La segunda se adentra en hechos tan destacados como el ateísmo, la doctrina de Maquiavelo y el papel del conde-duque de Olivares, y se cierra todo con una reconsideración del llamado «Quevedo reaccionario». La tercera parte, dedicada a la narrativa, plantea la cuestión, en parte teórica, de la naturaleza de lo que hoy se entiende por novela, género o modalidad dentro de la cual tiene el Buscón un papel destacado. Por fin, la cuarta y última versa sobre el amplio y heterogéneo fenómeno del conceptismo, del que se examinan sus logros y sus contradicciones, tomando como punto de referencia a Góngora y Gracián. En suma, un ensayo «global», en la acepción más moderna del género, sobre la obra de Quevedo y sus contemporáneos. Algo que sólo el experto en la materia Alfonso Rey, catedrático de Filología, podía llevar a cabo.
