En este libro, Irene Ortiz despliega una investigación arqueológica en torno a los relatos que permitieron la constitución del dispositivo de la ciudadanía desde los pilares que establecieron Atenas y Roma hasta nuestros días. Con más de dos mil años de distancia, la ciudadanía sigue siendo la herramienta legal que permite al Estado distinguir entre quiénes son «miembros» y quiénes «extraños». Este ensayo presenta un diagnóstico de la ciudadanía, de su formación y de sus efectos. Sin embargo, no se trata solo de indagar qué papel desempeña el artefacto jurídico de la ciudadanía en la protección de la vida y qué implicaciones tiene en nuestra comprensión del mundo, se trata también de evaluar si esta narrativa puede seguir explicando y dando respuesta a la urgencia de nuestro presente —a los encarcelamientos, a los naufragios, a la violencia legitimada institucionalmente contra quienes no tienen un pasaporte «fuerte». Tal vez sea tiempo de ejercitar la imaginación política y construir nuevos relatos con los que pensar nuevos mundos más justos y habitables.

The public authorities have not successfully resolved the management of the traumatic memory of the wars, dictatorships and massacres to which the European project was always intended to be a counterpoint. The conflict of memories and the public discourses about the past are latent on ideological, political and cultural levels. However, if in the past the conflict concerning memories tended to develop inside the borders of countries, it has now leapt into the European arena. This has also led to the confrontation and questioning of the great narratives established in the common memory, especially with countries of the East joining the European Union. Each community, group or nation maintains common memories that do not always fit in or converge with a general overall account. The origins of the UB Solidarity Foundation’s European Observatory on Memories lie in these debates, and through this book — which includes the contributions of specialists in multiple disciplines and the speeches that were given at the first international symposium, “Memory and Power: A Transnational Perspective” — it hopes to present some of the key challenges that this conflict of memories has in store for us in the present and in the future.

El mito de la vida privada está escrito en torno al concepto de ámbito privado. Con él se alude a la posibilidad de pensar en “uno mismo”, disponer de un tiempo donde tienen cabida aficiones, lecturas, relaciones e incluso, si el mercado laboral lo requiere, continuados procesos de formación. Pero si pensamos en la privacidad de las mujeres, no hallamos ingredientes tan singulares. Todo lo contrario, su privacidad se constriñe a los “huecos” que les dejen sus obligaciones familiares, cuando no la atención a personas mayores, enfermedades e imprevistos. Esta “sospechosa” similitud con el espacio doméstico sirve de punto de partida a la autora para indagar los procesos históricos que han gestado semejante desigualdad en el uso de la privacidad, además de aportar un estudio cualitativo, en el que las mujeres relatan cómo concilian su empleo y su hogar, hasta alcanzar, con mayor o menor éxito, un tiempo propio. Este libro trata sobre las observaciones del Dr. Guillermo González en relación al desarrollo de la personalidad colonizada en Puerto Rico. Este tipo de personalidad ha sido descrito anteriormente por otros psiquiatras y psicólogos ampliamente en la literatura mundial, pero nunca en Puerto Rico. Este tipo de personalidad se desarrolla en el individuo a consecuencia de vivir prolongadamente en las distintas colonias que se reconocen internacionalmente. La definición de una colonia utilizada en este libro es la que oficialmente utiliza la Organización de las Naciones Unidas (ONU) en su Comité de Descolonización. El libro intenta corregir vacíos y deficiencias de información en relación al situación objetiva de Puerto Rico y los puertorriqueños. En relación a Puerto Rico, en 1952 la ONU sacó incorrectamente a Puerto Rico de su listado de colonias. Esta decisión fue incorrecta, pues con la creación del Estado Libre Asociado, conocido en los EEUU como "Commonwealth of Puerto Rico", el título de propiedad de Puerto Rico todavía reside en los EEUU, según el Tratado de París de 1898. Desde entonces y hasta el presente, Puerto Rico es gobernado mediante decretos de los presidentes y leyes elaboradas en el Congreso de los EEUU. Esta admisión de hechos está oficialmente descrita en el informe del presidente Obama de 2011. En Noviembre 6 del 2012 se celebrará un plebiscito sobre el "status" de las relaciones con los EEUU. El autor describe en su libro cómo la personalidad colonizada en los puertorriqueños influenciará y decidirá la elección plebiscitaria en Puerto Rico.

Within the discipline of criminology and criminal justice, relatively little attention has been paid to the relationship between criminal law, punishment, and imperialism, or the contours and exercise of penal power in the Global South. Decolonizing the Criminal Question is the first work of its kind to comprehensively place colonialism and its legacies at the heart of criminological enquiry. By examining the reverberations of colonial history and logics in the operation of penal power, this volume explores the uneasy relationship between criminal justice and colonialism, bringing relevance of these legacies in criminological enquiries to the forefront of the discussion. It invites and pursues a better understanding of the links between imperialism and colonialism on the one hand, and nationalism and globalisation on the other, by exposing the imprints of these links on processes of marginalisation, racialisation, and exclusion that are central to contemporary criminal justice practices. Covering a range of jurisdictions and themes, Decolonizing the Criminal Question details how colonial and imperial domination relied on the internalization of hierarchies and identities -- for example, racial, geographical, and geopolitical -- of both the colonized and the colonizer, and shaped their subjectivity through imageries, discourses, and technologies.
