Staging Marriage in Early Modern Spain examines selected dramatic works where the vicissitudes of matrimony play center stage. Various aspects of conjugal relations including courtship, divorce, and widowhood take on particular relevance in the Spanish comedia in light of the intense debates raging over the 'seventh sacrament' in early modern Europe. The institution of matrimony is subject to unprecedented scrutiny during this period and provides a rich source of material for playwrights such as Lope de Vega, Miguel de Cervantes, and Pedro Calderón de la Barca. Taking the decrees on marriage of the Council of Trent (1563) as a point of departure, Carrión examines the conjugal bond within a literary and historical framework, offering close readings of dramatic works, religious decrees, and moral treatises where the conjugal bond plays a central role. She identifies in works such as Lope's Peribáñez y el Comendador de Ocaña, Cervantes' El juez de los divorcios, and Calderón's El medico de su honra the emergence of more modern perspectives on marriage. One of the central questions this study raises is the degree to which the dramatic works of early modern Spain conform to the morality espoused by the treatises that defined marriage at the time. While the tone of prescriptive discourses contrasts with the lyrical voices of the Spanish stage, both reveal a number of inherent-and compelling-contradictions in their views of the conjugal bond.

Esta nueva entrega de la colección Humanismo, Derecho y Criminología se debe a Aquilino Duque, poeta, narrador y ensayista, además de licenciado en leyes por la Universidad de Sevilla. El presente volumen recoge dos textos inéditos de Duque: uno de su juventud, “El poder en el teatro clásico español”, que presentó recién licenciado en el curso de doctorado de Derecho Político en su Facultad, y otro más reciente, titulado “Entre las Leyes y las Letras”, con el que agradeció su investidura como doctor honoris causa por una Universidad latinoamericana. Ambos textos son complementarios y bucean en el mismo mar: las relaciones entre el Derecho y la Literatura, y su ejemplificación a través de instituciones como el Rey, el poder, el símbolo, las pasiones, el honor, la deshonra o el orgullo en varios de nuestros pensadores clásicos y en algunas de las obras más representativas del teatro clásico español. La obra cuenta con sendos prólogos de los doctores Ismael Yebra y Alfonso Castro y su edición ha corrido a cargo del profesor Miguel Polaino-Orts. Con ella, la Facultad de Derecho homenajea a Aquilino Duque en su nonagésimo cumpleaños. Aquilino Duque nació en Sevilla, en 1931, donde cursó la enseñanza media y la universitaria, licenciándose en Derecho por la Universidad de Sevilla. Amplió estudios jurídicos en Inglaterra y Estados Unidos: Cambridge (Trinity Hall) y Dallas, Texas (Southern Methodist University). Poeta, narrador y ensayista. Ha residido en Ginebra y en Roma como funcionario internacional. Ha explicado cursos de Literatura española contemporánea en las Universidades de Sevilla y Chapel Hill, Carolina del Norte, y pronunciado conferencias en las Universidades de Cambridge, Sevilla, Roma, Pennsylvania, Georgetown, La Rábida, Málaga, Mar Menor, Oviedo, Guadalajara (Jalisco), Museo de Bellas Artes de Sevilla, Palacio de las Naciones de Ginebra, Instituto Británico de Sevilla, Instituto Español de Roma, Londres, Nueva York, Viena, Munich y Utrecht. Entre sus diferentes premios cabe destacar el Leopoldo Panero del Instituto de Cultura Hispánica y Fastenrath, de la Real Academia Española por su libro de poemas De palabra en palabra; finalista del Premio Nadal (1974) con la novela El mono azul, y Premio Nacional de Literatura (1975); Premio de periodismo José María Pemán, de la Caja de Ahorros de Cádiz. En 1998 pronunció el XVI Pregón taurino de la Real Maestranza de Sevilla. Miembro de número de la Real Academia Sevillana de Buenas Letras desde 1981, con un discurso de ingreso titulado “Andalucía, examen de conciencia”. Es doctor honoris causa por la Universidad Inca Garcilaso de la Vega, de Lima. Otras obras suyas son El mito de Doñana, Las nieves del tiempo, Las máscaras furtivas, Crónicas extravagantes y Mano en candela, así como los ensayos El suicidio de la Modernidad, El cansancio de ser libres y Una cruz y cinco lanzas.

Within the rich tradition of Spanish theater lies an unexplored dimension reflecting themes from classical mythology. Through close readings of selected plays from early modern and twentieth-century Spanish literature with plots or characters derived from the Greco-Roman tradition, Michael Kidd shows that the concept of desire plays a pivotal role in adapting myth to the stage in each of several historical periods. In Stages of Desire, Kidd offers a new way of looking at the theater in Spain. Reviewing the work of playwrights from Juan del Encina to Luis Riaza, he suggests that desire constitutes a central element in a large number of Greco-Roman myths and shows how dramatists have exploited this to resituate ancient narratives within their own artistic and ideological horizons. Among the works he analyzes are Timoneda's Tragicomedia llamada Filomena, Castro's Dido y Eneas, and Unamuno's Fedra. Kidd explores how seventeenth-century playwrights were constrained by the conventions of the newly formed national theater, and how in the twentieth century mythological desire was exploited by playwrights engaged in upsetting the melodramatic conventions of the entrenched bourgeois theater. He also examines the role of desire both in the demythification of prominent classical heroes during the Franco regime and in the cultural critique of institutionalized discrimination in the current democratic period. Stages of Desire is an original and broad-ranging study that highlights both change and continuity in Spanish theater. By elegantly combining theory, literary history, and close textual analysis, Kidd demonstrates both the resilience of Greco-Roman myths and the continuing vitality of the Spanish stage.
