En varios capítulos se estudia la administración territorial y local, la potestad normativa y sancionadora municipal así como diversas instituciones singulares como las merindades, la caballería de sierra, etc. In this collective work several historians of law and of institutions study the evolution of municipal structuresfrom the Late Roman period to the Middle Ages, as well as the prefeudal and feudal forms in Spain. They analize as well the persistence of Islamic traditions in council institutions, the Frankish contribution to the urban formation of the kingdoms of the Iberian Peninsula and the autonomy of councils vis-à-vis monastic encomiendas. Several chapters are devoted to territorial and local administration and the municipal lawmaking and punitive powers, and to the study of various peculiar institutions such as merindades, caballería de sierra, etc.

Text and Textuality in Early Medieval Iberia is a study of the functions and conceptions of writing and reading, documentation and archives, and the role of literate authorities in the Christian kingdoms of the northern Iberian Peninsula between the Muslim conquest of 711 and the fall of the Islamic caliphate at Córdoba in 1031. Based on the first complete survey of the over 4,000 surviving Latin charters from the period, it is an essay in the archaeology and biography of text: part one concerns materiality, tracing the lifecycle of charters from initiation and composition to preservation and reuse, while part two addresses connectivity, delineating a network of texts through painstaking identification of more than 2,000 citations of other charters, secular and canon law, the Bible, liturgy, and monastic rules. Few may have been able to read or write, yet the extent of textuality was broad and deep, in the authority conferred upon text and the arrangements made to use it. Via charter and scribe, society and social arrangements came increasingly to be influenced by norms originating from a network of texts. By profiling the intersection and interaction of text with society and culture, Graham Barrett reconstructs textuality, how the authority of the written and the structures to access it framed and constrained actions and cultural norms, and proposes a new model of early medieval reading. As they cited other texts, charters circulated fragments of those texts; we must rethink the relationship of sources and audiences to reflect fragmentary transmission, in a textuality of imperfect knowledge.

El Fuero de Madrid tradicionalmente ha sido interpretado como el conjunto de normas escritas para administrar la vida local de la Villa medieval de Madrid, concedidas en 1202 por el rey Alfonso VIII de Castilla. La obra comienza por realizar, a manera de antecedentes, un análisis de los orígenes del derecho territorial castellano y del influjo en él de la tradición visigoda. Los autores exponen a continuación la polémica sobre la fecha del Fuero de Madrid, las influencias del derecho toledano y la organización de la vida municipal entorno a la Villa y sus aldeas. En un estilo riguroso y claro, los autores pasan a examinar la estructura concejil interna, dividida en concejo mayor y menor, la composición social y religiosa y la vida de los gremios de la Villa. Finalmente, analizan las tensiones entre el Fuero y los intentos centralizadores de Alfonso X a través del Fuero Real, y la progresiva y paulatina desaparición del Fuero a raíz de la promulgación del Ordenamiento de Alcalá en 1348 por Alfonso XI. El texto es transcrito en su versión original, un dialecto mozárabe de origen toledano y, a continuación, traducido. Finalmente, se aporta la digitalización en color más reciente y de mayor calidad que del Fuero ha realizado el Archivo de la Villa de Madrid. En definitiva, estamos ante una obra de dos especialistas que combina la minuciosidad de la exposición, con un estilo ameno y comprensible para el simple aficionado a nuestra historia bajomedieval.

La obra del profesor Juan Baró Pazos que el lector tiene en sus manos pretende ser una síntesis de cuanto se ha publicado sobre los fueros castellanos, referidos a un peculiar ámbito espacial, el de las ocho provincias de Castilla la Vieja, de la vieja Castilla y de la Extremadura castellana, la Castilla a uno y otro lado del Duero: Burgos, Logroño, Santander, Soria, Segovia, Ávila, Valladolid y Palencia, provincias que ahora, por mor de lo que dispone el título VIII de la Constitución española de 1978, aparecen repartidas en tres Comunidades autónomas diferentes: Castilla y León, La Rioja y Cantabria. El estudio de los fueros castellanos se centra en las entidades de población cuyos fueros constituyen los ejemplos más significativos del derecho que se extendió por las distintas villas y ciudades que formaron parte del reino de Castilla, un reino definitivamente incorporado al de León en 1230 para configurar una nueva entidad político-administrativa, la Corona de Castilla y León a partir del reinado de Fernando III. Son los fueros municipales los que se incluyen en el texto, aunque también se incorpora alguna muestra que para algunos autores está fuera de la consideración de fuero local, para ser clasificado como carta agraria o de población, o «contrato agrario colectivo». Es el caso del texto del lugar de Brañosera, en las montañas hoy palentinas, el más antiguo de los textos locales castellanos, de origen condal y otorgado a sus primeros pobladores en el año 824. Finalmente, la obra reproduce las ediciones de los fueros, en su versión latina, con su traducción, o en su versión romance, tal y como han sido publicadas por sus mejores editores.
