If, as we believe, the history of languages is the history of the construction of an ideal artefact that permits a specific interpretation of the linguistic reality and helps to approve and assimilate a certain zone of diversity, enabling the accumulation of collective historical knowledge and making us identify it with a social community and a territory, then it must be agreed that languages are extremely complex entities. The new linguistic diversity that cultural globalisation and recent population movements have installed in most traditional linguistic territories has probably put the ideology of the national language into a state of crisis and, as a consequence, has made the ancient, intrinsic diversity of all languages visible, at least to the extent that this is still possible. Nowadays, then, the old linguistic diversity of dialects, of parlances, of local lexicons and the cultural forms that are reflected in these, of varieties and previously unsuccessful linguistic entities has been given a new opportunity in a world where the cohesion of societies and the welfare of citizens must be guaranteed using all available means. Looked at this way, the intricacy of languages may even open up an opportunity for local economic and social development.

As language historians we believe that the subject of our study is neither natural languages nor idiolects which speakers have always been able to develop individually (loosely what Chomsky calls L-i), but rather the social constructions of reference shared by all speakers (basically what Chomsky terms as L-e ). In this context the language historian essentially studies how a public L-e is built such that it can be understood as the language of all (i.e. hiding L-i variations) and also how L-e succeed in replacing the primary reality of idiolects, even if only in the imagination. Writing represents a crucial turning point in language construction, because it made it possible to materialize the abstraction that, until then, related speakers could only guess and besides it comes into competition with individual languages. In modern centuries, the provision of grammars, dictionaries and other such learning tools and systematizing instruments strengthens the idea that, because of their normative character, languages can be learned through study. Mythical stories encourage the achievement of prescriptive rules and lead speakers to link emotions to their language. Therefore, the topics of reflection that we want to discuss in this volume are: Norms, Myths and Emotions related to language construction.

En aquest dietari es veu el periple de Salvador Maset, un tarragoní nascut l'any 1900. La seva família era la propietària d'un celler-botiga a la plaça de les Cols. Tenia l'ofici de manyà, especialitzat com a torner metal·lúrgic, amb inquietuds polítiques i culturals que el van portar a autoformar-se i a adquirir una vasta cultura. Des de molt jove va ser membre del Tarragona F.C., entitat esportiva que el va relacionar amb molts altres tarragonins de la seva generació, i també va tenir des de molt jove activitat política, primer va ser militant de les joventuts del Partit Republicà Federal i a partir del 1931 militant d’Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya. El dietari comença el setembre de l'any 1942, moment en què fa el viatge amb molts altres exiliats republicans, primer amb el vaixell Mariscal Lyautey, des de Marsella fins a Casablanca, i després, amb el transatlàntic Niassa fins a Veracruz, a Mèxic. Acaba quan mor el dictador l'any 1975.
