Entre las múltiples perspectivas desde las que se puede abordar el encuentro de las religiones está la mística, la cual, por su carácter inefable y de exceso, deviene un lugar tan prometedor como inaccesible. Por ello se convierte en un no-lugar, en ou-topía. De ahí que las intervenciones recogidas en este volumen lleven por título esta posible imposibilidad: que las religiones se encuentren desde ese ámbito al que sólo se puede llegar descalzos de imágenes, palabras y conceptos, ese horizonte por alcanzar en el que dejan de ser ellas mismas precisamente para poder llegar a ser lo que desean ser, pero trascendidas, más allá de sí. Ahora bien, abordar el fondo místico de las religiones no supone refugiarse en una región evanescente que permitiría eludir el momento en el que se vive, sino todo lo contrario: desde ese no-lugar libre de juicio y de prejuicio surge el impulso común de las diversas tradiciones para ofrecer lo mejor de sí mismas en la transformación de lo humano. El encuentro interreligioso no puede ser concebido como la última estrategia de las religiones para no confrontarse con los grandes retos contemporáneos, sino, muy al contrario, como el lugar todavía por estrenar (por ello es aún un no-lugar) en el que se pueden estimular entre ellas para discernir el grano de la paja que se ha ido acumulando en el granero de las religiones y que las hace alarmantemente torpes si no reaccionan a tiempo.

Although there has been a massive increase in the volume of pilgrimage research and publications, traditional Anglophone scholarship has been dominated by research in Western Europe and North America. In their previous edited volume, International Perspectives on Pilgrimage Studies (Routledge, 2015), Albera and Eade sought to expand the theoretical, disciplinary and geographical perspectives of Anglophone pilgrimage studies. An ethnographic study based on decades of field research, Pilgrimage to Broken Mountain explores five sacred journeys to the peaks of venerated mountains undertaken by Nahua people living in northern Veracruz, Mexico. Punctuated with elaborate ritual offerings dedicated to the forces responsible for rain, seeds, crop fertility, and the well-being of all people, these pilgrimages are the highest and most elaborate form of Nahua devotion and reveal a sophisticated religious philosophy that places human beings in intimate contact with what Westerners call the forces of nature. Alan and Pamela Sandstrom document them for the younger Nahua generation, who live in a world where many are lured away from their communities by wage labor in urban Mexico and the United States. Pilgrimage to Broken Mountain contains richly detailed descriptions and analyses of ritual procedures as well as translations from the Nahuatl of core myths, chants performed before decorated altars, and statements from participants. Particular emphasis is placed on analyzing the role of sacred paper figures that are produced by the thousands for each pilgrimage. The work contains drawings of these cuttings of spirit entities along with hundreds of color photographs illustrating how they are used throughout the pilgrimages. The analysis reveals the monist philosophy that underlies Nahua religious practice in which altars, dancing, chanting, and the paper figures themselves provide direct access to the sacred. In the context of their pilgrimage traditions, the ritual practices of Nahua religion show one way that people interact effectively with the forces responsible for not only their own prosperity but also the very survival of humanity. A magnum opus with respect to Nahua religion and religious practice, Pilgrimage to Broken Mountain is a significant contribution to several fields, including but not limited to Indigenous literatures of Mesoamerica, Nahuatl studies, Latinx and Chicanx studies, and religious studies.

El fenómeno místico aparece como una constante universal en todas las formaciones religiosas. En nuestros días, se da además la novedosa reivindicación de una"mística profana" que tendría lugar fuera de los márgenes de la religión. Pero, aparte de los campos de la teología y la espiritualidad, fueron la psiquiatría, la psicología y, después, el psicoanálisis las disciplinas que mostraron un mayor interés en la experiencia mística. La irrupción de intensas vivencias afectivas, a veces acompañadas de fenómenos especiales como son las visiones y revelaciones, hicieron pensar que los dinamismos negados de la conciencia encontraban en este tipo de experiencia una oportunidad única de expresión y reconocimiento. El carácter regresivo, insano, o propulsivo y benéfico que pudiera comportar la vivencia mística fue y sigue siendo objeto de una encendida controversia. Pero, más allá de la cuestión clínica, el fenómeno místico se presenta como una particular forma de experiencia en la que las estructuras psíquicas más profundas se encuentran inequívocamente comprometidas. Determinar cuáles son esas dimensiones del psiquismo implicadas y el sentido que puedan tener en la dinámica global de la personalidad constituye un objetivo central del presente estudio. El análisis se limita a la mística occidental y, dentro de ella, se pretende determinar cuál pueda ser el significado de ese Otro con el que el místico se vincula en amor y gozo. Un Otro que simultáneamente puede provenir de ese "más acá" de la conciencia, en lo que sería el mundo inconsciente y, paralelamente, podría estar remitiendo también a un "más allá" de la misma, a una realidad trascendente, sagrada o no, con la que el místico dice estar en relación.
