Hasta la década de 1980, las desigualdades se pensaban y se sufrían como desigualdades de clase. Los partidos de izquierda y los sindicatos conducían las luchas obreras buscando acortar la distancia entre las posiciones sociales, en pos de un ideal compartido de justicia. Con el declive del mundo industrial, el régimen de las desigualdades mutó irreversiblemente. No es que no sigan existiendo las fábricas, los conflictos laborales, la explotación y las brechas entre los muy ricos y los muy pobres. Pero las clases sociales pierden consistencia y ya no definen las identidades. Estamos ingresando en un nuevo régimen que todavía no ha encontrado una forma política que lo exprese ni una teoría que lo explique. En este libro inspirado y fundamental, François Dubet apuesta a describir, más que el mundo que está muriendo, el mundo incierto que se avecina. Para eso, no pone el foco en el abismo entre el 1% y todo el resto, sino en las desigualdades moderadas que atraviesan la vida cotidiana cuando nos comparamos con quienes tenemos más cerca. En esa situación, cada uno se siente herido y desigual "en calidad de" algo: porque es inmigrante, joven, precarizado, excluido, beneficiario o no de asistencia social, mujer, viejo, titular o no de un título educativo útil; por el lugar donde vive, el acceso a seguridad o cobertura de salud, el nivel de ingresos y consumo, la pertenencia a una minoría sexual o disidencia. Todos creemos ser víctimas de un trato injusto, todos estamos más expuestos, más frágiles, más agobiados.
