Entre noviembre de 1991 y enero siguiente, se tomó la decisión de extinguir la reforma agraria mexicana del siglo xx. Iniciada en 1915 gracias al empeño de demandantes de tierras y de autoridades gubernamentales, esa reforma repartió más de la mitad de territorio nacional y dio lugar a una vasta redistribución de la riqueza que acabó con latifundios y latifundistas. Por ese motivo y por su larga duración, fue, es y será recordada como episodio excepcional de la historia mundial. Su final no halló una oposición generalizada. En este libro se abordan varias preguntas y llevan a centrarse en los enemigos de la reforma agraria, cada vez más poderosos y protagónicos. Se reconstruyen los acontecimientos del noroeste del país de la década de 1970, en especial las afectaciones agrarias de noviembre de 1976. Más que en el neoliberalismo o la apertura comercial, el texto ahonda en la historia agraria para entender la complejidad de los últimos años de dicha reforma.
