From May 31st to June 4th, 2016, the 7th International European conference on pre-Columbian textiles was held in Copenhagen. This volume unites seven original articles on pre-Columbian textiles from Mexico, which compare information on 20th century finds first described by Alba Guadelupe Mastache with that from previously unpublished finds and recently discovered contexts. A unique chapter presents the technical analysis and replication of a pre-Columbian tunic recovered in a cave site in Arizona, at the northern margins of the Mesoamerican interaction sphere. Thirteen articles on archaeological textiles from the central Andes include analysis of both textile assemblages preserved in museum collections and those recovered during recent fieldwork in archaeological sites of the Andean desert coast. These include textile assemblages representing the Initial and Formative Periods, Paracas and Nasca contexts, the Middle Horizon, diverse late Intermediate Period assemblages and emblematic Inca garments.

The Atlantic and Africa breaks new ground by exploring the connections between two bodies of scholarship that have developed separately from one another. On the one hand, the "second slavery" perspective that has reinterpreted the relation of Atlantic slavery and capitalism by emphasizing the extraordinary expansion of new frontiers of slave commodity production and their role in the economic, social, and political transformations of the nineteenth-century world-economy. On the other hand, Africanist scholarship that has established the importance of slavery and slave trading in Africa to the political, economic and social organization of African societies during the nineteenth century. Taken together, these two movements enable us to delineate the processes forming the capitalist world-economy, establish its specific geographical and historical structure, and reintegrates Africa into the transformations in the world economy. Este libro ofrece una introducción general a las religiones de Mesoamérica. No persigue un fin enciclopedista, sino demostrar que, aun en la época de la hiperespecialización académica, los estudios mesoamericanos integrales no son imposibles. Un aporte fundamental de esta nueva propuesta es impulsar conceptos que no provienen de la teología y de la historia de las religiones, sino de las mismas prácticas indígenas. Términos como politeísmo, cosmología, mitología, sacrificio y oración deberían ser cuestionados, si se pretende entender las religiones mesoamericanas en su propia lógica relacional. Porque en Mesoamérica, la vida ritual trata sobre todo del manejo de relaciones sociales y asuntos prácticos que afectan los diferentes seres del cosmos, humanos y no-humanos. No existe un dualismo metafísico que separe lo espiritual de lo mundano ni las separaciones tajantes entre humanos, animales y otros seres: los dioses son seres cercanos a los humanos y a los demás agentes del cosmos; incluso se les trata como parientes o se les identifica con los ancestros. Pero, al mismo tiempo, también pertenecen a ámbitos de la alteridad que son peligrosos, hasta cierto punto misteriosos u ominosos y, sobre todo, muy difíciles de controlar. Una obra que cuestiona modelos eurocéntricos para estimular la reflexión y el debate.
