Entre fines de la Edad Media y el siglo XVIII los hombres de Occidente intentaron controlar una enorme cantidad de textos que el libro manuscrito y luego el impreso habían puesto en circulación. Inventariar los títulos, clasificar las obras, dar un destino a los textos, fueron operaciones gracias a las cuales se hacía posible el ordenamiento del mundo de lo escrito. De este inmenso trabajo son herederos directos los tiempos contemporáneos. La invención del autor como principio fundamental de designación de textos, el sueño de una biblioteca universal, real o inmaterial, que contenga todas las obras escritas, el surgimiento de una nueva definición del libro, constituyen algunas de las innovaciones que, antes o después de Gutenberg, transforman la relación con los textos y se proponen instaurar un orden. No obstante, ninguno de estos dispositivos ha tenido el poder de anular la libertad de los lectores. Aunque limitada por las competencias y las convenciones, esta libertad transgrede y reformula las significaciones que intentan reducirla. La relación entre las normas y la posibilidad de violarlas no es siempre la misma, en todas partes y para todos, Reconocer sus diversas modalidades, sus variaciones múltiples, es el objeto primero de esta obra, escrita en vísperas de un tiempo en el que el orden de los libros podría ser nuevamente trastornado.
