La modernidad como "proyecto inacabado" ha estado presente en la reflexión de Jürgen Habermas desde el discurso que, bajo el mismo título, ofreció al recibir el premio Adorno en 1980. Esta obra fue proyectada, más que como un libro, como el inicio de un movimiento filosófico continental.
