Anyone who travels today through the Catalan territory will be drawn to several farmhouses that not only show their age, but the characteristic features of a wealthy peasantry. If they are on a leisure trip, it is even possible that they have a meal or even spend some nights in one of these houses, and perhaps in that solitude, they will be able to admire the wild nature that surrounds them. But this way of life also seems to suggest that things were not always the same. Catalan masos were specific operating units around which men articulated and rearranged the Catalan agricultural, livestock, and forested areas for centuries. In fact, in many of these farmhouses the accumulated documents reveal the remença, that is, the servile origins of their holders. The same holders that would constitute a sort of rentier aristocracy in the nineteenth century, thanks to the work of masovers. In this book, which was made possible thanks to the richness of the archives of the region, some members of the Centre de Recerca d’Història Rural of the Universitat de Girona aim to get the reader acquainted with the main historical processes that shaped and differentiated masos from the early Middle Ages until today. That is, from the birth of an agricultural system to its end Qualsevol que viatge avui pel territori català s'elaborarà a diversos masos que no només mostren la seva edat, però els trets característics d'una pagesia ric. Si estan en un viatge de plaer, és fins i tot possible que tinguin un dinar o fins i tot passar algunes nits en una d'aquestes cases, i potser en aquesta soledat, que podran admirar la natura salvatge que els envolta. Però aquesta forma de vida també sembla suggerir que les coses no sempre van ser els mateixos. Masos catalans eren unitats operatives específiques al voltant del qual s'articulen els homes i reorganitzar el català agrícola, ramadera i boscoses àrees durant segles. De fet, en molts d'aquests masos dels documents acumulats revelen la remença, és a dir, els orígens servils dels seus titulars. Els mateixos titulars que constituirien una mena d'aristocràcia rendista en el segle XIX, gràcies a la tasca de masovers. En aquest llibre, que va ser possible gràcies a la riquesa dels arxius de la regió, alguns membres del Centre de Recerca d'Història Rural de la Universitat de Girona tenen per objecte aconseguir que el lector familiaritzat amb els principals processos històrics que van donar forma i diferenciats masos de l'Alta Edat Mitjana fins a l'actualitat. This volume helps us to understand that the current political disorders in Catalonia have deep cultural roots. It focuses on the rise of Catalan cultural, national and linguistic identity in the 20th century. What is happening in Catalonia? What lies behind its political conflicts? Catalan identity has been evolving for centuries, starting in early medieval ages (11th and 12lve centuries). It is not a modern phenomenon. The emergence of imperial Spain in the 16 c. and the French Ancien Régime in the 17 c. correlates with a decline of Catalan culture, which was politically absorbed by the Spanish state after the conquest of Barcelona in 1714. However, Catalan language and culture flourished again under the stimulus of the European Romantic Nationalism movement (known as the Renaixença in Catalonia). During the first Dictatorship (Primo de Rivera, 1923-1930), the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939), and the long Francoist era (1939-1975), Catalan language and culture were repressed, yet refurbished and reconstructed at the same time. This rise of a plural, complex, and non-homogeneous Catalan identity constitutes the subject matter of this volume. National conflicts that emerged later in the Spanish democratic state leant heavily on the life engagement and vital commitment experienced by the entrenched intellectual movements of the twentieth century in Catalonia, Valencian Country and the Balearic Islands. This book reveals the cultural and literary grassroots of these conflicts.

The Spanish Civil War was fought not only on the streets and battlefields from 1936 to 1939 but also through memory and trauma in the decades that followed. This fascinating book reassesses the eras of war, dictatorship and transition to democracy in light of the memory boom in Spain since the late 1990s. It explores how the civil war and its repressive aftermath have been remembered and represented from 1939 to the present through the interweaving of war memories, political power and changing social relations. Acknowledgement and remembrance were circumscribed during the war's immediate aftermath and only the victors were free to remember collectively during the long Franco era. Michael Richards recasts social memory as a profoundly historical product of migration, political events and evolving forms of collective identity through the 1950s, the transition to democracy in the 1970s, and in the bitterly contested politics of memory since the 1990s.

El moderno «Derecho penal del enemigo» es la respuesta punitivista que han dado algunos Estados democráticos a determinadas amenazas, fundamentalmente de terrorismo. Sin embargo, durante el siglo xx Europa ha conocido un Derecho penal del enemigo de corte totalitario. Su estudio nos advierte de las posibles consecuencias del abuso de estas políticas criminales combinadas con un Estado politizado. En este libro se ha abordado el análisis del Derecho penal del enemigo durante los primeros años de la dictadura franquista (1938-1944), a través de varios ejemplos de su legislación, pero también de su doctrina y la jurisprudencia. Fundamentalmente, se analiza la representación del enemigo que se hizo el «nuevo Estado» de Franco, a través de las sentencias de los consejos de guerra durante la posguerra en la ciudad de Alicante. Ignacio Tébar es licenciado y doctor en Historia por la Universidad de Alicante y licenciado en Antropología Social y Cultural por la UMH. En Violencia política en la II República y el primer franquismo proponemos tratar, mediante. un ejercicio de historia comparada, de caracterizar las manifestaciones de la violencia durante la dictadura del general Franco a partir de lo ocurrido durante la II República para demostrar que ésta no fue una respuesta a la situación de los años treinta, como se argumentó durante mucho tiempo, sino un proyecto político perfectamente premeditado. El periodo 1936-1950 responde a ese requerimiento, conscientes de que analizamos situaciones y regímenes políticos totalmente diferentes. La manifestación y planificación de la violencia, en sus diferentes vertientes física y simbólica o psicológica, se convierten en el principal objetivo del análisis. Entendemos la violencia como un problema de carácter estructural consustancial con la historia contemporánea de las sociedades capitalistas. La evolución de las dos últimas centurias la han convertido en una de las principales características en las relaciones entre los Estados y la sociedad civil. El marco regional y local facilita en parte este proyecto a la vez que sirve para poner de manifiesto pautas de comportamiento a menudo divergentes a las del resto del Estado, al menos, a los grandes núcleos de población ya estudiados en otras ocasiones (Barcelona, Valencia, Madrid, etc.). La provincia de Albacete, por su fidelidad al bando republicano hasta el final de la contienda, se nos muestra como un escenario privilegiado en el que observar el ejercicio del poder republicano y franquista en toda su dimensión.

Madrid became one of the key symbols of Republican resistance to General Franco during the Spanish Civil War following the Nationalists' failure to take the city in the winter of 1936-7. Yet despite the defiant cries of 'No pasarán', they did eventually pass on 28 March 1939. This book examines the consequences in Madrid of Franco's unconditional victory in the Spanish Civil War. Using recently available archival material, this study shows how the punishment of the vanquished was based on a cruel irony - Republicans, not the military rebels of July 1936, were held responsible for the fratricidal conflict. Military tribunals handed out sentences for the crime of 'military rebellion'; mere passivity towards the Nationalists before 1939 was not only made a civil offence under the Law of Political Responsibilities but could cause dismissal from work; and freemasons and Communists, specifically blamed for the Civil War, were criminalized by decree in March 1940. However, contrary to much that has been written on the subject, the post-war Francoist repression was not exterminatory. Genocide did not take place in post-war Madrid. While a minimum of 3113 judicial executions took place between 1939 and 1944, death sentences were largely based on accusations of participation in 'blood crimes' that occured in Madrid in 1936. Moreover, and unlike most other accounts of the Francoist political violence, this book is concerned with the question of when and why mass repression came to an end. It shows that the sheer numbers of cases opened against Republican 'rebels', and the use of complex pre-war bureaucratic procedures to process them, produced a crisis that was only resolved by decisions taken by the Franco regime in 1940-1 to abandon much of the repressive system. By 1944, mass repression had come to an end.
