En la introducción, Carlos Escalante, coordinador de este libro dice que una de las herencias que dejó la Colonia en los países de América fue una amplia población que no sabía leer ni escribir. Acorde con el pensamiento liberal de las élites latinoamericanas, los primeros gobiernos tuvieron que enfrentar la cruda realidad de una población mayoritaria que no tenía derecho a la ciudadanía por no estar alfabetizada. Dado que este problema es mundial, se justifica la importancia de estudios de corte histórico sobre el analfabetismo. Con este objetivo, el lector se encontrará con diversas experiencias de alfabetización de adultos, emprendidas a lo largo del siglo XX a escala nacional, por gobiernos de diferentes países de América Latina. Los estudios aquí reunidos muestran algunas campañas y programas de alfabetización que marcaron por diversas razones las vivencias de educación de adultos como la Campaña Nacional contra el Analfabetismo en México (1943-1946), las campañas de alfabetización de Guatemala (1945-1954) y la campaña de educación de adolescentes y adultos en Brasil (1947-1963), además de las campañas y programas de alfabetización de las décadas de 1960 y 1970 desarrolladas en Cuba, Chile y Argentina, sin olvidar las míticas campañas de alfabetización de las revoluciones cubana y nicaragüense, con un estudio de los diferentes momentos que ha pasado la alfabetización y castellanización en Bolivia, a lo largo del siglo XX. Con la inquietud de aportar al conocimiento histórico de la alfabetización y su contraparte, el analfabetismo, los autores abordan en la primera parte del libro, las campañas cruzadas, políticas y programas alfabetizadores desarrollados en México, Guatemala, Brasil, Cuba, Chile, Argentina y Bolivia, En la segunda parte aglutina temas referentes a cartillas, manuales, métodos, materiales educativos y testimonios de alfabetizadores en Guatemala, Brasil, Chiles, Argentina y Nicaragua y en algunos casos los vastos tirajes de las ediciones del material pedagógico utilizado. Para finalmente invitar a los estudiosos de la educación a conocer el libro para comprender los procesos socioeducativos que han excluido a millones de habitantes y que en la actualidad es una deuda pendiente.
