El amamantar, simple y complejo a la vez, se construye esencialmente de a dos: un niño que necesita alimentarse para sobrevivir y una madre que necesita y desea ofrecer su leche. Ambos conforman una relación de mutuo requerimiento en la que el beneficio es doble y que está condicionada por factores biológicos, psicológicos y socioculturales. Este manual, al desarrollar distintos aspectos implicados en el acto de amamantar, se constituye en una guía tanto para quienes deseen capacitarse en la tarea de puericultura como para los agentes de salud, quienes cumplen un rol fundamental en el asesoramiento y acompañamiento en esta etapa tan significativa de la vida de una mujer. Laura Krochik es especialista en lactancia y crianza con formación en Ciencias de la Educación de la UBA. Instructora en psicoprofilaxis obstétrica y puericultura, se capacitó profesionalmente en instituciones de primer nivel, como el Hospital Infantil “Ramón Sarda”, la Liga Internacional de la Leche y la Fundación Lacmat, entre otros. Además, se desarrolló como puericultora en clínicas privadas y centros de salud de excelencia. En 2007 fundó la Asociación Civil Argentina de Puericultura, entidad que actualmente preside. Andrea Talner es enfermera universitaria por la Univer-sidad de Buenos Aires y puericultora. Desde hace más de doce años dedica sus esfuerzos a promover la lactancia materna y ayudar a las familias en el complejo camino de la crianza de sus hijos. En 2007 integró el equipo fundador de la Asociación Civil Argentina de Puericultura, siendo elegida prosecretaria de la misma, cargo que ejerce hasta la actualidad.

Over the past decade or so, the social scientific sociological analysis of the family has been obliged to reconsider its traditional view that industrialisation triggered a shift within society from the 'large family', which fulfilled all social functions from socialising the children to caring for the sick and the old, to the modern nuclear family, which was regarded solely as being the locus for emotional relationships. Historians have shown that in the past there was a variety of family structures within a range of varying demographic, economic and cultural frameworks, distinctive for each society. At the same time, the interaction between sociology and social anthropology has led to a clearer conceptual analysis of that vague, polysemic term 'family'; and notions of dwelling-place, descent, marriage, the relative roles of husband and wife and parent-child relations, as well as the more general relations between generations, have in a variety of past and present social contexts been taken apart and analysed. In this book, the author synthesises European and North American historical and social anthropological material on the family that shows the reversal of the frequently held view of the family as an institution in decline, showing it instead to be both dynamic and resistant.
