En 1605 Miguel de Cervantes concluía su historia de El ingenioso hidalgo don Quijote de la Mancha aventurando una posible continuación y abriendo, al mismo tiempo, la puerta a que otros pudiesen cantar «con mejor pluma» las andanzas de su héroe. Lo que no se imaginaba es que, casi diez años después y a la vista de que no salía la esperada segunda parte de su novela, un lector impaciente y tan entusiasta de su libro como hostil a su persona iba a arrebatarle el testigo para sacar de su retiro aldeano a don Quijote y a Sancho. Así, a finales del verano de 1614, este misterioso lector, camuflado bajo el seudónimo de Alonso Fernández de Avellaneda, lanzaba al público el Segundo tomo del ingenioso hidalgo don Quijote de la Mancha, apresurando a Cervantes a publicar su prometida segunda parte e inaugurando uno de los episodios más enigmáticos de la historia de la literatura española.

Alonso Fernández de Avellaneda, es el supuesto autor del Quijote apócrifo (titulado Segundo tomo del Ingenioso Hidalgo don Quijote de la Mancha), publicado en Tarragona en 1614. Ha habido múltiples conjeturas y teorías sobre la verdadera identidad de Fernández de Avellaneda. Martín de Riquer sugirió que se trataba de Jerónimo de Pasamonte, soldado y escritor contemporáneo de Miguel de Cervantes que combatió en Lepanto, como él, y autor de una Vida, que no llegó a ser impresa. Otra hipótesis afirma que se trata de Cristóbal Suárez de Figueroa. Figueroa se desplazó a Barcelona en un intento desesperado de embarcarse con el séquito del conde de Lemos pero no consiguió ser tenido en cuenta. Ofendido por las intrigas de Cervantes incluyó en su libro España defendida unas durísimas estrofas contra este. Cervantes, a su vez, lo satirizó en el episodio de la imprenta de Barcelona, aludiendo a cierto "traductor del italiano".

La continuación apócrifa del Quijote cervantino, escrito por quien firma como Alonso Fernández de Avellaneda, y publicado en la segunda mitad de 1614, ha conocido una interesante difusión en Europa y América. Los problemas críticos que esta continuación plantea son de primer orden y afectan a distintos factores de la producción literaria: desde la transmisión editorial a través de sus distintos procesos, desde el manuscrito al volumen impreso, hasta el establecimiento de la identidad de Avellaneda, que ha sido atribuida a casi todos los autores del Siglo de Oro, desde, rizando el rizo, el propio Cervantes hasta Lope de Vega, Quevedo, Tirso de Molina, Ruiz de Alarcón o Cristóbal Suárez de Figueroa. Esta edición conjetura cómo la obra de este último resulta ser mucho más próxima a las características textuales de Avellaneda que la de cualquiera de los demás nombres propuestos. La edición aporta, además, el nombre de otros dos autores, hasta ahora no contemplados por la crítica, que presentan un porcentaje muy elevado de identidad de usos léxicos con el texto de Avellaneda.
