El bienio 2010-2012 corresponde a la etapa en la que culminó la política de pacificación del conflicto armado por parte del Gobierno colombiano contra las FARC-EP por vías exclusivamente militares. Para entonces, el desgaste de la llamada tesis del fin del fin (según la cual esa guerrilla estaba inminentemente derrotada) y la continuidad de los hechos de guerra condujeron a ambos actores hacia la búsqueda de la paz por la vía del diálogo. El mayor desafío de este viraje se presentó en el ámbito discursivo: ¿cómo sentarse a dialogar con el enemigo sin reconocer ante él y ante la opinión pública el desgaste del proyecto militar y político en ambos bandos? Esta es justamente la pregunta de la que se ocupa este libro, y a partir de la cual es posible poner en evidencia un fenómeno ignorado en el estudio del conflicto colombiano: el hecho de que los discursos no solo se producen y se reproducen, sino que también crean sus modos de ponerse en escena, activan y transforman memorias u olvidos, construyen objetos, disputas y posicionamientos; además de esos y otros procesos, los discursos también tienen que lidiar con su deterioro, su erosión, el desdibujamiento de sus líneas finas y el debilitamiento de su efectividad para influir en la esfera pública. El análisis de la dimensión retórica y las relaciones problemáticas entre desacuerdo y verdad resultan centrales para los desafíos que enfrenta la transición hacia el ejercicio de una oposición política sin armas por parte de las guerrillas en la Colombia contemporánea.

Blackness Without Ethnicity draws on fifteen years of his research in Bahia, Rio Suriname, and Amsterdam. Sansone uses his findings to explore the very different ways that race and ethnicity are constructed in Brazil and the rest of Latin America. He compares these Latin American conceptions of race to dominate notions of race that are defined by a black-white polarity and clearly identifiable ethnicities, formulations he sees as highly influenced by the US and to a lesser degree Western Europe. Sansone argues that understanding more complex and ambiguous notions of culture and identity will expand the international discourse on race and move it away from American dominated notions that are not adequate to describe racial difference in other countries (and also in the countries where the notions originated). He also explores the effects of globalization on constructions of race.
