This comparative study examines the strategies of re-politicization and socialization employed in contemporary Argentine film and theatre produced in the wake of the 1976-83 dictatorship. It focuses on the socio-political facets of performance across a range of films and dramatic compositions. This comparative study examines the strategies of re-politicization and socialization employed in contemporary Argentine film and theatre produced in the wake of the 1976-83 dictatorship. It focuses on the socio-political facets of performance across a range of films and dramatic compositions. The book highlights the manner in which the trope of performance represents the place in which film and theatre experiment with generic and mediatic hybridization. Each chapter takes as its point of departure a series of politically motivated appropriations made by cinema and theatre from neighboring genres/media. In each case, genre is shown to take on the role of mediator between competing aesthetic forms: between aesthetics and politics; aesthetic performance and social performance; reality and fiction; postmodern heterogeneity and an increasingly present modern anxiety regarding the perceived need to preserveartistic purity/autonomy, thus restoring what is specific to theatre and cinema's type of communication. Philippa Page has managed the cultural programme at the Maison de l'Argentine in the Cité Internationale Universitaire, Paris and continues to research in the field of Argentine performance studies.

Auto/biographical narratives of the Americas are marked by the underlying themes of movement and belonging. This collection proposes that the impact of the historic or contemporary movement of peoples to, in, and from the Americas—whether chosen or forced—motivates the ways in which identities are constructed in this contested space. Such movement results in a cyclical quest to belong, and to understand belonging, that reverberates through narratives of the Americas. The volume brings together essays written from diverse national, cultural, linguistic, and disciplinary perspectives to trace these transnational motifs in life writing across the Americas. Neste livro, Hal Foster interpreta a História da Arte como um sujeito regido pelo modelo psicanalítico lacaniano, no qual operaria o retorno do real, isto é, a alternância de antecipações e reconstruções de eventos traumáticos. Esse mecanismo se manifestaria tanto nos movimentos neovanguardistas no contexto histórico, como no próprio objeto principal da arte contemporânea – o real. Para Foster, que parte de uma concepção dialética inspirada por sua leitura de Marx, a neovanguarda, longe de ser uma mera repetição – tal qual a proposição de Peter Bürger exposta em Teoria da Vanguarda – seria uma recepção com resistência de algo que foi reprimido historicamente nas primeiras vanguardas. O construtivismo russo e o dadá duchampiano pós anos 60 seriam, portanto, um novo ciclo nos diversos ciclos que um evento histórico revolucionário acarreta. Outros exemplos seriam a teoria de Freud, seguido pela leitura de Lacan, e a de Marx, seguido por Althusser. Enquanto as vanguardas do início do século XX representaram um rompimento com as convenções estéticas, as neovanguardas direcionaram seu questionamento para a própria instituição da arte. Desse modo, elas representam um aprofundamento de sua versão anterior e cumprem um papel mais central na perspectiva da dimensão social da arte.

The appearance of sound film boosted entertainment circuits around the world, drawing cultural cartographies that forged images of spaces, nations and regions. By the late 1920s and early ‘30s, film played a key role in the configuration of national and regional cultural identities in incipient mass markets. Over the course of the twentieth and early twenty-first centuries, this transmedia logic not only went unthreatened, but also intensified with the arrival of new media and the development of new technologies. In this respect, this book strikes a dialogue between analyses that reflect the flows and transits of music, films and artists, mainly in the Ibero-American space, although it also features essays on Soviet and Asian cinema, with a view to exploring the processes of configuration of cultural identities. As such, this work views national borders as flexible spaces that permit an exploration of the appearance of transversal relations that are part of broader networks of circulation, as well as economic, social and political models beyond the domestic sphere.
