Este libro trae hasta nuestro momento la cuestión del barroco hispánico, haciendo memoria activa de aquella su peculiar lectura de mundo con la intención de salvar para nosotros algo de aquel barroco que amenaza con desaparecer con cada presente que no se reconozca mentado en él. Un solo imaginario, un, por la fuerza unificado, mundo simbólico funcionó en aquel tiempo, definido, desde finales del siglo XVI hasta la década de los veinte o treinta de 1700, como un verdadero clima, como una «esfera» dentro de la cual los puntos interrelacionados constituyen un sistema. Cabe añadir acerca de esta constelación político-psicológica que se trataba de un sistema «sereno», el cual proveía de hipótesis no sólo para el hecho mismo del mundo y su desenvolvimiento histórico, sino también afirmaba la posibilidad de alcanzar un vislumbre y aquilatar un significado para aquel «otro» mundo, que se constituye siempre en contrafigura (y, acaso, como espectro) de este. Las fuerzas culturales que actuaban en aquella peculiar constelación aventuran una explicación fundada en el hecho de la irrupción que la sobrenaturalidad realizaba en el plano de la realidad cotidiana, manifestándose de modo taumatúrgico en la historia.
