El siglo XVIII, el Siglo de las Luces: «el gran siglo» según Michelet. Sí, indudablemente, si la grandeza de un siglo se mide por el brillo del pensamiento libre y por la preocupación por el destino terrestre de los hombres. Todavía encerrado en las supervivencias de la época feudal, heredero de estructuras aparentemente inmóviles, el siglo, último del Antiguo Régimen, se despega poco a poco del antiguo orden y se abre a un mundo ampliado tanto por el pensamiento crítico y el progreso científico como por la expansión mercantil y por una economía conquistadora. Implicando tras de sí a un mundo todavía desigualmente conocido, pero al que pliega cada vez más a sus curiosidades e intereses, Europa entra en la modernidad con ritmos desiguales según la posición geográfica, el peso de la historia o el nivel económico. Grandes inercias persisten, sin duda, en el orden social, y más aún en el orden de las mentalidades. Pero la sociedad se mueve en su nivel profundo, los marcos jurídicos se quiebran, las tinieblas retroceden. El orden nuevo está gestándose. Último siglo del Antiguo Régimen, pero también de la «época moderna», ¿acaso no se nos muestra el siglo de las Luces como el primero de la modernidad? ¿Acaso no habría comenzado el siglo XVIII con la polémica entre Antiguos y Modernos? Su modernidad se define, en efecto, por una revolución del conocimiento, por una mutación intelectual y un nuevo espíritu científico, por la matematización progresiva de lo real y del saber, de la técnica y, por tanto, de la civilización, y, finalmente, por la creencia razonada en la superioridad del hombre inventor y creador. De ahí, en el transcurso del siglo, esos múltiples cuadros de los progresos del espíritu humano. Es entonces, hacia mediados de siglo, cuando aparece la palabra civilización, cuando de todo el movimiento científico y filosófico comienza a desprenderse la gran idea de una ciencia racional y experimental, una en sus métodos y en sus pasos. La civilización es aquello hacia lo que tienden los progresos del espíritu humano y la dinámica de la historia: un orden racional que asegure la justicia social y la felicidad. Ése es el mensaje que nos ha legado el Siglo de las Luces. Y es de ese siglo XVIII del que somos todavía directos descendientes.
