In modern times there have been studies of the Roman Republican institutions as a whole as well as in-depth analyses of the senate, the popular assemblies, the tribunate of the plebs, the aedileship, the praetorship and the censorship. However, the consulship, the highest magistracy of the Roman Republic, has not received the same attention from scholars. The purpose of this book is to analyse the tasks that consuls performed in the civil sphere during their term of office between the years 367 and 50 BC, using the preserved ancient sources as its basis. In short, it is a study of the consuls 'at work', both within and outside the city of Rome, in such varied fields as religion, diplomacy, legislation, jurisdiction, colonisation, elections, and day-to-day politics. Clearly and accessibly written, it will provide an indispensable reference work for all scholars and students of the history of the Roman Republic.

La victoria de Constantino en la batalla del Puente Milvio adquirió gran trascendencia casi desde el mismo año 312, principalmente porque cristianos y paganos la relacionaron con su conversión a la Christianitas. Desde entonces, la conducta procristiana del monarca comportó relevantes cambios en el registro histórico, entre los que destacan el apoyo tutelado a las iglesias y, en general, el fenómeno de la «cristianización» del mundo antiguo. Vinculados al congreso internacional que se celebró en Barcelona y Tarragona del 20 al 24 de marzo de 2012 para conmemorar el 1700.º aniversario de tal efeméride, los estudios que conforman este volumen examinan diferentes y complementarias cuestiones relativas a la trayectoria de este poliédrico emperador y aspectos político-religiosos de su época, prestando asimismo atención a los «Constantinos» mostrados por el ingente y secular acervo documental alusivo a su figura. En el análisis y la contextualización del proceder de Constantino, resulta axial su actuación en el ámbito confesional, caracterizada tanto por el favor al cristianismo como por la conservación de la tradición pagano-imperial, aunque más empobrecida. Mediante una atenta valoración crítica de los testimonios existentes, el presente libro profundiza en la dimensión histórica y legendaria de un personaje clave en el paso del poder pagano al poder cristiano y, en consecuencia, fundamental en el decurso del Imperio romano y de nuestra Europa, en la cual el cristianismo sigue manteniendo un notable protagonismo.

A defining moment in Catholic life in early modern Europe, Holy Week brought together the faithful to commemorate the passion, crucifixion, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. In this study of ritual and music, Robert L. Kendrick investigates the impact of the music used during the Paschal Triduum on European cultures during the mid-16th century, when devotional trends surrounding liturgical music were established; through the 17th century, which saw the diffusion of the repertory at the height of the Catholic Reformation; and finally into the early 18th century, when a change in aesthetics led to an eventual decline of its importance. By considering such issues as stylistic traditions, trends in scriptural exegesis, performance space, and customs of meditation and expression, Kendrick enables us to imagine the music in the places where it was performed.

From the studioli, or private studies, of humanist scholars in fifteenth-century Padua to the Fifth Avenue apartments of Gilded Age collectors, viewers have delighted in the mysteries of these objects: how they were made, what they depicted, who made them, and when. El presente trabajo está dividido en tres capítulos que, desde lo general a lo particular, estudian la formación e historia del Monte Testaccio en la regio XIII de la Roma clásica. El Testaccio es un vertedero estatal dedicado exclusivamente a recibir los envases del aceite encaminado a Roma por el estado romano. En efecto, la excavación que desde 1989 viene realizando en él un equipo español dirigido por los profesores Blázquez y Remesal, ha permitido comprender que el Testaccio es un basurero estatal únicamente constituido por ánforas que llevaron a la Ciudad aceite desde la Bética (« 85%), África del Norte (« 10%) y provincias del Mediterráneo (« 5%). En el tercer capítulo, el último libro, se estudian las vicisitudes históricas del Monte Testaccio, no sólo en la antigüedad sino también hasta nuestros días. Así, era necesario poner en relación los nuevos hallazgos realizados por la misión arqueológica española, que excava actualmente el Monte con los antiguos datos recogidos por Dressel y Bruzza (básicamente en el CIL SV) y más modernamente por Rodríguez Almeida. Todas estas informaciones debían contrastarse con las noticias históricas que tenemos sobre el Monte desde la Edad Media y que fueron básicamente recopilados por Orano.
