This book presents an overview of the region with one of the fastest growing higher education sectors in the world. Until the beginning of the 1980s, universities were restricted to the elites in Latin American countries, with less than 5 million students enrolled in its courses. In the last four decades, however, the region went through a boom of higher education institutions and now has more than 25 million students enrolled in more than 3,800 universities – approximately 10% of all students enrolled in higher education courses in the world with four times more higher education institutions than Europe. The boom of Latin American higher education is analyzed in this contributed volume by leading experts from the region. They discuss the causes and consequences of this massive expansion and the challenges they pose for different stakeholders such as governments, private entrepreneurs, teachers, researchers, students, policy makers, educational managers and many other social groups. This book discusses one of the hottest topics in science today, i.e., the concern over certain problematic practices within the scientific enterprise. It raises questions and, more importantly, begins to supply answers about one particularly widespread phenomenon that sometimes impedes scientific progress: group processes. The book looks at many problematic manifestations of “going along with the crowd” that are adopted at the expense of truth. Closely related is the concept of pathological altruism or altruism bias—the tendency of scientists to bias their research in order to further the ideological or financial interests of an “in-group” at the expense of both the interest of other groups as well as the truth. The book challenges the widespread notion that science is invariably a benevolent, benign process. It defines the scientific enterprise, in practice as opposed to in theory, as a cultural system designed to produce factual knowledge. In effect, the book offers a broad and unique take on an important and incompletely explored subject: research and academic discourse that sacrifices scientific objectivity, and perhaps even the scientist’s own ethical standards, in order to further the goals of a particular group of researchers or reinforce their shared belief system or their own interests, whether economic, ideological, or bureaucratic.

Deshilando la madeja es un libro que aborda los obstáculos que han enfrentado la consolidación de los estudios de género en México, a través del recorrido en sus páginas de tres vías. En la primera se mira la investigación científica sobre género y mujeres en México a través de las opciones actuales para publicar y difundir resultados de investigación. La segunda parte del reconocimiento de la importancia que tiene la conformación de comunidades epistémicas en el desarrollo de las disciplinas, así como de la trascendencia de la formación de recursos humanos en campos especializados; en ese marco se sigue el hilo de la institucionalización de los programas académicos de género en las instituciones mexicanas de educación superior y en las políticas públicas que han incidido en su configuración, entre ellas el Sistema Nacional de Investigadores. La tercera vía intenta aproximarse a los vínculos de la investigación con el persistente problema de la violencia de género, con la idea de que existe un desencuentro entre la dimensión social del problema y la atención que la academia ha brindado a este campo temático. En cada una de las vías se trazan los hilos en la trama que ha tejido la institucionalización de los estudios de género, al tiempo que se advierten los avances y obstáculos para su consolidación. El mensaje del texto es que vivimos momentos inéditos que defienden nuestro tiempo, marcados por nuestros intereses, nuevos marcos conceptuales y nuevos derroteros que señalan el devenir del género en las instituciones académicas y que se expresan en las formas en que estas asumen sus funciones de investigación, docencia y difusión.
